Target: Pat Quinn, Governor, Illinois
Goal: Praise Governor Quinn for helping to curtail sales of puppy mill animals
Puppy mills are profit-oriented organizations (legal and illegal) that breed and raise cats and dogs; many puppy mills raise their animals in horrid conditions unfit for any living creature, and they often treat them with a complete lack of humanity. Puppy mills across the country earn millions of dollars every year selling their animals to pet stores. Praise the Governor of Illinois for supporting recently introduced legislation that aims to curtail puppy mill sales.
Since so many puppy mill cats and dogs are raised in horrid conditions, and since they seldom receive the care they need, these animals often arrive at pet stores with severe physical and behavioral problems. Pet stores rarely inform consumers that the animals they are purchasing were bred and raised with massive and inhumane neglect. Since these animals are so damaged, many consumers who purchase them quickly discover they are unable to properly care for them. Many of these consumers will then give their new pets to local animal shelters. An animal shelter will care for these animals, but it will often have to euthanize them if unable to find them new homes. Fortunately, new legislation was recently introduced to help curtail these needless deaths. An amendment to HB 4056 would force pet stores to only acquire their cats and dogs from animal shelters, animal control facilities, or from humane breeders. Inhumane puppy mills would no longer be able to sell their animals to pet stores. Governor Pat Quinn recently supported the amendment by stating: “This proposal will help end inhumane puppy mills, protect pet owners and help shelter animals find loving homes.”
Sign the petition below to praise Governor Quinn for supporting the new anti-puppy mill legislation and to encourage him to follow through and do everything within his gubernatorial might to ensure this legislation becomes law.
Dear Governor Quinn,
I was gladdened to hear of your support for the recent amendment to HB 4056, which would prevent pet stores from acquiring their cats and dogs from the incredibly horrid and inhumane puppy mills that plague not only Illinois but our entire nation. This legislation would force pet stores to get their animals from animal shelters, animal control facilities, and directly from breeders proven to be humane. Since so many puppy mill cats and dogs are raised in horrid conditions, and since they seldom receive the care they need, these animals often arrive at pet stores with severe physical and behavioral problems. Many consumers find they cannot care for these damaged creatures and give them to animal shelters. Shelter animals are often euthanized if new homes are not found for them. Shutting puppy mills down would prevent many of these needless deaths.
Pet stores are some of the main sales outlets for puppy mills; without these revenue streams, Illinois puppy mills may be forced to permanently close their doors.Thank you for supporting the recent amendment to HB 4056. Please do everything within your gubernatorial power to ensure that this proposed legislation becomes law.
