Target: Michael McIntosh, Adams County Sheriff
Goal: Rescue mice and rats from horrible conditions and cruel treatment at Willards Rodent Factory.
Recently released video footage, captured as part of a PETA investigation, has revealed the horrifying conditions and shockingly inhumane treatment of animals at two pet breeding operations in Thornton, Colorado. The footage is of Willards Rodent Factory and Jurassic Pets (a rodent breeding farm and pet store, respectively), where animals are allegedly routinely starved, drowned, bashed, shot and frozen alive.
Kenneth and Lynn Kubic, owners and operators of the two businesses, breed mice and rats in a barn on their property and sell rodents, cats, reptiles and fish at Jurassic Pets. In the barn, the mice and rats are reportedly kept in cramped, filthy tubs surrounded by weeks of accumulated bodily waste. The tubs often flood, drowning hundreds of mice and rats. However, according to Lynn Kubic, fewer rodents die from flooding than from starvation. The animals are fed once a month, and routinely denied water.
The animals at Jurassic Pets allegedly live in similarly overcrowded conditions, in which, according to PETA, “feces, rotting meat and dead animals collected for days.” One PETA witness documented “thousands of deaths” due to negligence, sometimes occurring in mass die-offs in the case of the fish. Kenneth Kubic has admitted to shooting cats, whose kittens are sold at Jurassic Pets. A PETA witness documented two kittens with severe respiratory infections that were denied veterinary care and subsequently died.
Refusing to provide veterinary care due to the financial costs, the Kubics reportedly solve health issues with the animals by simply killing them. Some sick or injured animals are literally tossed into freezers and frozen alive, suffering excruciatingly slow and painful deaths. Others are “thrown to the cats.” Many are “whacked” (swung by their tails and smashed into a hard surface). A PETA witness captured footage of a small rat after he was “whacked,” still alive, shaking and gasping for air for ten minutes.
On October 2, 2014, PETA submitted eyewitness statements, video and photographic evidence, and veterinary reports to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO). Although the Thornton Police Department has since seized some of the animals at Jurassic Pets, the ACSO still has yet to rescue the animals at Willards Rodent Factory.
The appalling treatment of the animals at the hands of the Kubics makes these “businesses” places of unspeakable horror for these poor creatures. Please sign the petition below and urge the ACSO to enforce Colorado’s cruelty-to-animals statue and immediately rescue all animals from Willards Rodent Factory.
Dear Sheriff McIntosh,
A recent investigation by PETA has provided indisputable evidence of cruel and inhumane treatment of thousands of animals at Willards Rodent Factory, owned and operated by Adams County residents Kenneth and Lynn Kubic. Video footage shows mice and rats being slammed against tables, frozen alive, and routinely denied veterinary care.
Some animals have been rescued from Jurassic Pets, also owned by the Kubics, based on similar evidence. However, thousands still remain, enduring tremendous suffering in horrific conditions, at Willards Rodent Factory.
The treatment of these animals, which is not only enormously unethical but also illegal, must come to an end. I am urging you to enforce Colorado’s cruelty-to-animals statue and immediately seize all of the animals being held at Willards Rodent Factory.
