Praise Ban on Using Animals in Cruel Circuses

Target: Guatemala City Mayor, Alvaro Arzú

Goal: Praise Mayor Arzú for banning the use of circus animals in Guatemala City.

Guatemala City Mayor Alvaro Arzú has seen enough of the cruel treatment of circus animals and has issued a decree banning them from Guatemala City. The mayor posted the decree on his Facebook page stating that, “[Circus animals] are subjected to a brutal mistreatment, and we don’t want to participate in this type of behavior,” and that he thinks “most Guatemalans will understand.”

His recent announcement to ban traveling circuses from containing animals in their acts was met with enthusiasm from many who denounce the inhumane treatment of animals in entertainment shows. More than 100 replies were posted from Guatemalans who supported the mayor’s decision. Mayor Arzú’s decree comes shortly after a series of fines were given to a local animal circus for mistreating their animals, and also follows Mexico City’s similar ban on circus animal that was announced last year.

Many people see animals used for entertainment as an enjoyable experience and do not see the injustice behind it, nor do they see the inhumane treatment and abuse that commonly occurs in these operations. The sad spectacle can bring in a lot of money, which encourages circus leaders to push the animals to exhaustion. Ignoring injuries until animals can no longer perform is also a common occurrence in circuses.

Circus operators will not stop when there is money to be made. The only way to end this animal abuse is to ban the use of animals in circuses all together. Please sign the petition below to thank Mayor Arzú for his decision to ban them from Guatemala City.

Dear Mayor Arzú,

I would like to thank you for your decision to ban circuses that use animals from performing in Guatemala City. Circus animals are routinely pushed to the brink of exhaustion and many who attend circus shows do not see the abuse that occurs when the curtain closes.

Using animals for entertainment purposes is wrong and more people need to realize that we should not use them as a tool for making money. While some may be sad to see such acts go, it must be done in order to discourage circuses from allowing the animals to suffer abuse.

Standing up for the inhumane treatment of animals is an often-overlooked issue by city officials, and it is incredibly important to have a strong animal rights presence among those in government positions. Thank you for having the courage to spread your message and ban circus animal acts from performing in Guatemala City.
