Target: President of Turkey, Abdullah Gul
Goal: Thank the government of Turkey for enforcing animal laws and requiring new pet owners to have certification and training for ownership
Turkey has recently enforced a new animal law that states that every individual who wants to have an animal as a pet will need to undergo proper training. New pet owners will also have to show that they have the means to accommodate the welfare of an animal, as well as meeting requirements that are needed to maintain the animal’s health and strength. Alongside this new rule, the sales of pets will be banned from pet shops and prison sentences will be introduced for cruel abusive behavior toward animals. By having this new law, any person who tries to adopt an animal will have to be evaluated to see if they meet the standards to handle the well-being and happiness of an animal.
Another section of the new law bans the killing of homeless and feeble animals, except for exceptional conditions expressed in the law. Under the new regulations, scientists and researchers are not allowed to do experimental work on animals until they have acquired the right certificates and ethical training programs in order to do so. Even the exporting and importing of animals are regulated under this new law.
Not only is this new law presented to aspiring pet owners, but it is also strictly enforced by Turkey. News reports show that anybody who breaks this new law will be fined 2,000 liras or roughly 940 US dollars for torturing animals, 1,000 liras or 470 US dollars for those who abuse animals on purpose, and a prison sentence of up to two years for those who sexually abuse their pets.
Along with these rules, Turkey is also working hard to put a ban on animal fighting which would go under the category of mistreating animals on purpose. Please sign this petition to thank the Turkish government for enforcing these new animals rules and regulations for pet owners.
Dear President Abdullah Gul,
We think that it is great that the Turkish government has taken this courageous first step to stopping animal abuse. Thousands of animals are given or sold to unfit pet owners every day all over the world. If every country had strict regulations such as yours, then the world would be a better place for animals. The new law is very impressive and covers the owning, selling, experimenting, and basic caring of animals. It filters out the abusive owners and leaves space for people who truly want to care for their pets.
Requiring a training program and certificate for handling animals should be a universal rule. We hope that other countries will see what your country is achieving and will follow in your footsteps.
