Punish Men Who Allegedly Harassed Orcas for Selfies

Target: Samuel D. Rauch III, Deputy Assistant Administrator for Regulatory Programs, NOAA Fisheries

Goal: Punish three men who allegedly harassed a group of orcas.

A pod of transient orcas was reportedly harassed by three men on jet skis off the coast of California. According to researcher Alisa Schulman-Janiger, who was studying the group at the time, the men got so close to the whales that they almost ran over them twice with their watercraft. She took photographs of one of the men holding out what appears to be a camera in an apparent attempt to get a selfie with some of the whales.

It is against rules set by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to get within 50 yards of a dolphin or orca (also known as a killer whale). These large, intelligent mammals are particularly sensitive to harassment, and when people invade their space, they may suffer from stress. At a time when large sea mammals are already suffering due to overfishing and climate-related concerns, they do not need humans to make their lives even more difficult in their struggle to survive.

If the allegations against these men are true, they must be held accountable for their self-centered and potentially harmful behavior. Sign below to demand that NOAA investigate the researcher’s claims and the photographic evidence and make sure that these men are punished accordingly if found responsible for harassment.

Dear Mr. Rauch,

Three men are suspected of having harassed a group of orcas off the Californian coast in the name of getting up-close photographs and film footage. A known orca researcher claims that the men got well within the 50-yard limit and almost ran over the creatures in their watercraft. These are serious allegations that must be investigated further.

Orcas are highly sensitive to harassment and are already struggling to survive in our changing oceans where food has become more scarce. We cannot allow people to cause them further harm, especially for such selfish motivations. We, the undersigned, ask that you take the claims of potential harassment seriously and dedicate your resources toward investigating and punishing the alleged suspects, if they’re found to be in violation of the existing rules.
