Save the Eurasian Dipper

Eurasian Dipper

Target: First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones

Goal: Clean up polluted rivers to protect wildlife in Southern Wales

Recently the United Kingdom began cleaning up their rivers and coastlines in an effort to bring back the local wildlife and the plan has received much success. However, a recent study of the Eurasian Dipper found some startling news. Pollutants that still remain in the rivers of Southern Wales are affecting the hormone levels and sex development of these birds. The United Kingdom has to continue cleaning up their waterways to ensure this pollution problem goes away for good.

Studies found that the pollutants in the rivers and other waterways were affecting the development of fish, and now new studies found that it was affecting the Eurasian Dipper. These birds feed exclusively on the insects and fish in the river, thereby ingesting whatever pollutants the insects and fish absorbed. Scientists found that chicks whoi lived by the polluted river produced chicks that were underweight from their rural counterparts. These chicks also had altered hormone levels with fewer female chicks hatching.

A team of scientists working in Cardiff suggest that urban contaminants like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and flame retardant chemicals are to be blamed. Results from their tests showed a strong correlation between chemical contaminants and depressed thyroid levels in chicks. One such reading found one thyroid hormone was 43% lower in chicks from urban rivers than those in rural rivers. Complications that arise from thyroid hormone disruptors are varied, but can include impaired growth, cognitive dysfunction, compromised immune system, and behavioral abnormalities that can persist through adulthood.

It is crucial that Wales continues cleaning up these rivers. The government needs to work with water companies, regulators, and the community to clean the water. This cleaning effort should not stop until all pollutants have been removed for the benefit of the local wildlife. Sign this petition and voice your concern to the First Minister of Wales.

Dear Carwyn Jones,

I am writing to you about the plight of the Eurasian Dipper, a bird who lives in the rivers and other waterways of Wales. I realize that the United Kingdom began a plan to clean up their waterways, and it has become successful. The wildlife is coming back, but recent studies have found startling evidence of contamination in these birds.

Because of pollutants like PCB and other flame retardant chemicals, these birds are ingesting these chemicals and it’s causing complications with their hormones and sex development. It’s led to smaller chicks being born around urban rivers, and fewer females. I am urging you to continue the cleanup effort in these rivers to ensure no further wildlife will be harmed from these pollutants. The United Kingdom has done a wonderful job cleaning up so far, but it needs to continue to prevent abnormalities in our wildlife.
