Stop “Maximum-Pain” Experiments on Dogs

Target: Doug Bannerman, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Office of Research Oversight in the Department of Veterans Affairs

Goal: Demand that researchers stop doing cruel and painful maximum-pain experiments on innocent dogs.

Four dogs reportedly died while many others suffered when they were subjected to cruel medical experiments in a taxpayer-funded VA research project. Researchers at the facility induced heart attacks and surgically implanted pacemakers into the dogs, allowing them to suffer pain as part of the experiment. Demand justice for these innocent dogs.

The Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center came under intense scrutiny after the research facility reportedly conducted maximum-pain experiments on dogs as young as six months. Maximum-pain experiments are experiments in which significant pain is induced and is intentionally not relieved. As part of a study on human cardiac abnormalities, the dogs were subjected to heart attacks, forced to run on treadmills, and implanted with pacemakers. Four dogs allegedly died due to mistakes made during surgery and many more were euthanized.

Dr. Alex Tan, the primary researcher on the project, was barred from working with animals. He remains a lead cardiologist at the Maguire VA. The VA maintains that animal experimentation is beneficial and necessary to scientific research. Sign below and demand that the VA stop using dogs as research subjects in maximum-pain experiments.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Executive Director Bannerman,

Four dogs reportedly died while many more suffered when they were subjected to painful experiments at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center. The dogs were used in maximum-pain experiments and were allegedly denied pain relief. We demand justice for these innocent dogs.

Puppies as young as six months were reportedly subjected to severe pain and suffering without relief in a taxpayer-funded cardiac research project. They were forced to run on treadmills, given heart attacks, and implanted with pacemakers. Mistakes in surgery allegedly took the lives of four dogs and many more endured unalleviated pain and suffering before they were euthanized. While we recognize the benefits of medical research, maximum-pain experiments are unnecessarily cruel and companion animals should not be subjected to such torture.

We demand that you stop doing maximum-pain experiments on dogs at McGuire VA and nationwide immediately.

Sincerely,
