Applaud Ban on Wild Animals in Circuses

Target: Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands

Goal: Praise prohibition of wild animals in the Netherlands’ circuses

The Netherlands is officially the 30th nation to ban the use of wild animals in circuses. It is no mystery that circus animals live emotionally and physically unstable lives. In order to coerce the animals to perform, trainers use physical and emotional abuse, often tearing off the animals’ skin with bull hooks and whips. There is no educational benefit to watching circus animals perform. Banning the use of wild animals in circuses is an important step in discontinuing the use of animals for all of human entertainment.

Using wild animals in traveling circuses is extremely cruel and archaic. Periodically released footage shows that the wild animals imprisoned by circuses are severely mistreated behind the scenes. This exposure has led to countless citizens avoiding, or boycotting circuses that travel around countries and the world. In turn, governments around the world are issuing legislation that protects wild animals from suffering needlessly at the hands of circus trainers. Circuses that can no longer utilize wild animal acts will have no problem remaining in business; in fact, attendee numbers may increase.

Sign this petition to applaud the Netherlands for issuing this compassionate legislation. Encourage the Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, to encourage the neighboring countries to follow suit. There will be a day when no wild animal will be exploited for human entertainment.

Dear Prime Minister Rutte,

I am writing to applaud you for banning the use of wild animals in the Netherlands’ circuses. This legislation comes just days after Mexico passed a similar circus ban. Wild animals should not be abused and exploited for human entertainment.

Because you understand the importance of this legislation, I urge you to approach the Netherlands’ neighboring countries to further the wild circus animal prohibition. For example, The United Kingdom insists that animal welfare is a main priority; however, legislation to ban wild animals in circuses was created two years ago, and has yet to be put into practice. The people of the Netherlands are extremely passionate about animal welfare, as are those in the UK.

Thank you for understanding that the use of wild animals in circuses is both archaic and abusive. There exists no nice way to force a wild animal to perform unnatural tricks or behaviors. I deeply respect the Netherlands for its leadership in animal welfare.

  1. Thank you for taking the humane and enlightened step to stop the use of wild animals in circus entertainment. This practice has caused the terrible suffering to millions of wild animals who were kidnapped from the wild and their families and sold into slavery.

  2. This is why I’ve never taken my kids to the circus.

  3. The US is lagging behind here while every day wild animals are still being abused in their circuses.

  4. Circuses has never been entertaining at all anyway.

  5. For those of us who do not live in the Netherlands (or the other countries with a ban on live animals in circuses), let’s just encourage everyone to boycott any circus which does use animals as “entertainment” (or any SeaWorld type of place that does).

  6. Thank you for being not just WISER, but more COMPASSIONATE than leaders in other countries as yet are! I only got taken to ONE circus (with animal slaves) as a very young girl, and REFUSED to ever go to another one again, it was all so upsetting to witness what they were forced into doing! NOT “entertaining” in any respect! That wasn’t, and never would be, how I wished to view ANY animal.

  7. May the ban last…

  8. Rights for all circus animals. We want an indefinite ban.

  9. Karen Remnant says:

Now all countries need to ban animals in circuses!

  10. YES! it’s about time!
