Stop Tearing Elephants From Their Mothers and Shipping Them to Chinese Zoos

Target: Oppah Muchinguri, Minister of Environment, Water and Climate, Zimbabwe

Goal: Ban the export of wild baby elephants from Zimbabwe to Chinese zoos.

For the past several years, Zimbabwe has been exporting a number of young wild elephants to Chinese zoos. These elephants, some as young as three years old, are sedated and separated from their herds before being held in prison-like facilities, where they are kept with little stimulation or interaction with others of their kind.

In a recent example of this shocking and cruel practice, video has surfaced showing a five-year-old female elephant being punched and kicked in the head just moments after she recovered from sedation. A number of wildlife rangers can be seen harassing and beating her as they try to force the young elephant into a truck. This abuse must not be tolerated, and the practice of capturing these young elephants must be brought to an end.

Elephants are known for being exceptionally intelligent, sensitive creatures that form life-long family bonds. Separating a baby elephant from his or her family and forcing them to endure a life in captivity is inhumane. Sign this petition and demand that Zimbabwe put an end to this horrific trade.

Dear Minister Muchinguri,

Your country has exported dozens of young wild elephants to China over the past several years to help pay for the salaries of wildlife management officials as well as to assist in the nation’s recovery from drought. This practice has resulted in widespread abuse and mistreatment, as seen in the recent video from Hwange National Park showing a five-year-old female elephant being repeatedly kicked in the head by a handler.

Elephants, particularly ones as young as the elephant shown in the film, belong in their close-knit family herds, not in zoos half a world away. Please consider the welfare of these intelligent and sensitive creatures and find another way to cover the costs of wildlife management that does not involve this cruel exploitation.

The only thing to stop their barbaric treatment of animals is to stop trading with them. Unfortunately we need their produce and I ,for one , wish we didn’t. It’s immoral and grossly cruel to treat animals in this manner. The Chinese have no conscience. They leave babies to die.

    • I agree with you Christine. The only way to stop countries like Zimbabwe and China is to stop trading with them. Why would they treat animals any better than they do their own people.
It is only money that will speak to these barbaric countries.

  2. Please stop trading.. Please stop trading.. Start a fundraiser for the employees who kick baby elephants in the head. There is Gofundme to name one but a non-profit could help from trading the elephants to a scary China.

  3. So so so so so so so so sos SAD!!!!

  4. Nothing sentient should ever be sent to the Chinese. The poor innocents are sure to be abused, tortured, slaughtered, caged, painfully exploited for folk medicines, tormented for entertainment. They are a heartless people who would abort/disappear/abandon baby girls in favor of male children. Before you call me a racist, I was 4 yrs-old when my own mother left me at a crowded outdoor mkt; I found my way home and she opened the door without a word, so I know of which I speak.
