Praise Humane Population Control for Stray Dogs

Target: Dr. C. R. Kapdi, Founder, Society of Animal Protection, Kolhapur, India

Goal: Applaud initiative to control stray dog populations ethically and humanely.

Stray dogs are an increasing problem in India, but now one animal welfare group is beginning a capture-sterilize-release program that will help control populations. By controlling dog populations, the program will help eliminate hunger and reduce encounters with humans. Welfare group Society of Animal Protection, in conjunction with veterinarians across Kolhapur, will be capturing the dogs, sterilizing them, marking them and keeping them in recovery for three days before releasing them.

Stray dogs running in the streets put citizens at risk of attack. These attacks can result in injury or even the spread of rabies, infection, or other illnesses. The dogs are also at risk of danger from humans — attacks against these animals have been prevalent in the media. Several dogs were recently poisoned, leaving corpses scattered in the streets, and some dogs have even been violently stabbed or brutally beaten with wooden boards.

The program will focus on stray dogs in Kolhapur, with hopes to later expand the drive with the help of other organizations and government agencies. It will also provide reduced-cost vaccinations to dog owners who want to protect their own animals.

Trap-sterilize-release programs have long been regarded as one of the most humane methods of population control. This move will not only reduce hunger and disease, but will help reduce injuries in both dogs and humans due to unwanted encounters. Sign the petition below to praise this move, which could help humanely control stray dogs throughout India.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Dr. C. R. Kapdi,

Stray dogs will be captured, sterilized, and allowed to recover before release thanks to a new humane population control initiative by the Society of Animal Protection in Kolhapur. The initiative will also be funding reduced-cost vaccinations for pet owners who want to protect their own dogs.

This will help reduce hunger and disease among stray dogs, as well as help reduce problematic dog-human encounters. Sometimes, dogs will attack humans, leaving them with infections or worse, rabies, and sometimes humans will cruelly attack dogs in the streets.

Not only will this program benefit the animals and humans of Kolhapur, but will set a positive example for the rest of India. We, the undersigned, thank you for your efforts to humanely remedy problems with stray dogs.

Sincerely,
