Success: Virginia Prohibits Fox Pens

Target: Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe

Goal: Thank Virginia governor for banning fox penning

A previous petition demanded that the Virginia government stop the use of fox pens to train hunting dogs, and the Virginia governor has answered. This cruel bloodsport is finally coming to an end: recent legislation will phase out fox pens and ban the opening of new ones.

Fox penning needlessly perpetuates cruelty against wildlife in the name of tradition, and is little better than dogfighting. Foxes and coyotes are typically wild-caught in leg-hold traps, which can severely injure or maim them, and are then transported, frequently without food or water, across long distances. Placed in large fenced areas, they are hunted down by dogs and violently killed or maimed.

Injuries and death are obviously frequent, and hundreds of animals are sacrificed in these pens for no justifiable reason. Prohibiting fox penning ends the needless suffering of wildlife in the name of so-called sport. Every aspect of fox penning, from capture to death, is needlessly inhumane and downright cruel, and the practice is not widely supported. Virginia voters, in fact, overwhelmingly opposed fox penning and supported the prohibitory bill.

No animal should be made to suffer in this manner, and the Virginia government has made the right decision. This is a victory for animal welfare, and should be commended.

Dear Governor Terry McAuliffe,

It has come to my attention that you recently signed into law legislation that will end the use of fox pens. Fox penning has long been condemned as cruel, despite support as a traditional training method.

I am grateful that Virginia has taken this most vital step for animal welfare, and ended the suffering of wildlife. Thank you for taking action to end this bloodsport, and protecting wildlife from exploitation and abuse.

  1. Virginia is not one of the more enlightened states in the union, and her record on animal welfare and protection is far from adequate. But, finally, I’m proud to be a Virginian. Let’s carry this new ethic of caring about animals to its next level.
