Free Black Bear from Cruel Entertainment Park

Target: Sarah Luick, Chair, Animal Legal Defense Fund

Goal: Praise organization’s efforts to free a black bear suffering in atrocious conditions

Little Ricky, a black bear, has been kept in a tiny cage for 18 of her 19 years on earth. The bear, captured when it was only a cub, is on display at Jim Mack’s Ice Cream in Pennsylvania, a family entertainment facility featuring snacks, mini golf, and other activities. Much of the bear’s life has been spent in a 250-square-foot enclosure made of chain link fencing, aluminum siding, and concrete.

The bear’s enclosure is almost 500 times smaller than the space a black bear would normally occupy in the wild and barren of any live plant matter or open water. Ricky can only take a few steps in either direction before turning around and has developed a permanent limp because of the repetitive motions. The bear’s ability to engage in animal behaviors, such as swimming or tree climbing, is severely limited.

Veterinarians concluded that Ricky is suffering immensely due to the lack of space and natural stimulation in her cage. The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), a nonprofit that has filed a lawsuit on the bear’s behalf, said that these types of conditions can cause anxiety, stress, and chronic health issues in captive animals. The lawsuit also states that the bear, which mostly eats dried corn and grains from a nearby vending machine, is not being fed an adequate diet.

Bears are highly intelligent and active creatures, and it is cruel to keep them in such cramped conditions. The Animal Legal Defense Fund has already located a sanctuary willing to provide a more natural habitat for the bear should its lawsuit succeed. Sign the petition below to show your support for the ALDF’s campaign to relocate Little Ricky.

Dear Ms. Sarah Luick,

The Animal Legal Defense Fund  has recently filed a lawsuit to remove Little Ricky, a 19-year-old black bear, from an entertainment park. The bear is being kept in a concrete and chain link enclosure smaller than most one-person apartments. The lack of roaming space, open water, and plant life has caused the bear’s health to deteriorate to the point where it walks with a limp from repetitive motions.

The ALDF has found a sanctuary where, if the lawsuit is successful, the bear will be able to enjoy a far-improved quality of life. We, the undersigned, praise your efforts to remove Little Ricky from her cruel and negligent owners.

  1. At the very least, Jim Mack’s ice cream shop should be boycotted !!! As for this businesses patrons, no one with an ounce of compassion would shop at a place that blatantly abuses a helpless animal. As for Jim, or whoever is responsible for this atrocity, the only appropriate punishment is “an eye for an eye” – chained up outside for as many miserable years as his helpless victim.
