Puppy Reportedly Burned With Hot Oil and Denied Care Deserves Justice

Target: Sheriff Omar Lucio, Cameron County, Texas

Goal: Punish dog owners who reportedly allowed a puppy to suffer for days with severe burns covering 25 percent of his body.

A puppy is in the care of the Harlingen Humane Society after being burned severely with hot oil. According to reports, a quarter of the puppy’s fur was burned off, leaving red, inflamed skin and blisters. Veterinarian Technician Donja Rodriguez said that the 2-month-old pit bull puppy, named Phoenix, was dehydrated and in pain, and had severe burning on his neck, top of his head and part of his back. While the owners claim it was an accident, they allegedly allowed Phoenix to suffer for four days before he was finally taken to a veterinarian.

Police are currently refusing to press charges in this case. According to them, the owners’ attempt to put a cream on the severe wounds was enough. While the owners claim that they could not afford the trip to the veterinarian, there are several animal rescue agencies in the area that could have been contacted.

If a child was burned this severely and only given a cream, the child would have been taken away and the parents charged with neglect. It’s unfair that police consider allowing a dog to suffer in extreme pain for days at a time to be allowable. Sign the petition below to demand that police begin taking animal neglect seriously by laying charges against the owners who allegedly denied a seriously injured puppy much-needed medical care.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Sheriff Lucio,

A puppy allegedly suffered severe burns on a quarter of his body after hot oil was accidentally poured on him. The owners are accused of denying the animal proper care, choosing to put a cream on the severe burns instead of taking the animal to a veterinarian. When the dog, named Phoenix, was finally given care, he was found to be dehydrated and in severe pain. While the owners claim that they could not afford the trip to the veterinarian, they could have called several animal rescue agencies for help.

If a child was allowed to suffer like this, police would certainly have laid charges. This dog is a sentient being, and felt the exact same pain over those four days that a child would have. Your refusal to press charges in this case is disgusting and shows a lack of compassion toward animals. We, the undersigned, demand that police begin taking animal neglect seriously by laying charges against the owners who allegedly denied a seriously injured puppy much-needed medical care.

Sincerely,

Animal abusers need to be on a Watch List, not a licensing list. These persons are abusers of defenseless animals. These persons caught recklessly harboring animals, leading to the abuse and cruel circumstance of these animals, MOST SPECIFICALLY DOG FIGHTING… are DISCOVERED and FINALLY reported to you all, the US Government regulators/protectors of health and life in the USA. These persons need to be PROSECUTED, JAILED, AND FINED. If that is “impossible” their name(s) must be added to a nationwide/www Watch list, as all abusers are (sexual, domestic, pedophiles). Their names need to be published; they need to be at the very least EMBARRASSED through television, radio, and any and all social media. That doesn’t cost too much money.

All are affected by the examples of the way we treat the less fortunate, especially those living creatures that cannot protect themselves.
