Therapy Dog Killed by Hunter Deserves Justice

Target: Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada

Goal: Extend no-hunting zone to woods surrounding lake following the death of a therapy dog.

Canadian therapy dog Kaoru was reportedly shot and killed by a hunter who apparently mistook her for a wolf. Trainer Valley Calderoni was walking Kaoru in the woods when she heard the shot, and held the dog in her arms as she died from her wounds. Fortunately, the hunter seemed apologetic and cooperated with the investigation, which is still underway.

This is a devastating tragedy. Kaoru was well-loved not only by her trainer, but by the autistic children and emotionally challenged adults she worked with. Accident or not, this therapy dog was a beautiful and loving animal who should not have died, nor should her trainer have had to undergo the trauma of watching her partner bleed out and die.

Lake Lucille, where Calderoni regularly hikes, is near a no-hunting zone, but the protection has not extended to the trail itself. Calderoni is currently raising funds to extend the no-hunting zone to the trail, and this endeavor must be supported. Sign this petition to urge Canadian law to prohibit hunting in this area to prevent future tragedies.

Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,

A beloved therapy dog was reportedly shot and killed by a hunter who mistook her for a wolf. The dog was walking with her trainer in the woods surrounding Lake Lucille when the shot fired; trainer Valley Calderoni saw Kaoru bleeding and could only hold her as she died from her wounds.

This tragedy should not have happened, accident or not. This dog deserves justice, and the way to obtain it is to support Calderoni’s endeavor to protect the hiking trail and the woods from hunters. You must implement a ban on all hunting in the area surrounding Lake Lucille to prevent future tragedies like this one, to protect all hikers and their animals from accidental shootings. Please support the endeavor known as Kaoru’s Spirit Trail as fully as possible.

  1. This is a tragedy! Stop hunting! Why would you shoot a wolf anyway? What do we shoot anything that moves? Stop killing innocent wildlife!

  2. Candy Niewinski says:

How aweful! Please do this for the safety of other’s as well. I can’t imagine her heartbreak.

  3. Only a cold hearted sack of trash would shoot a wolf, let alone someone’s pet. How horrible for the poor owner too. Legal action needs to be harsher for animal abusers.
