Punish Prison Guard Accused of Kicking Kitten Just for Fun

Target: Keith L. Fagundes, District Attorney, Kings County, CA

Goal: Find and prosecute prison guard who allegedly kicked kitten high into the air, breaking its leg.

A prison guard is currently under investigation for allegedly kicking a feral kitten high into the air, resulting in severe injuries. According to a letter written by inmate Richard Sandoval, the guard “kicked the baby kitten about 20 feet up in the air and broke its back left leg.” The kitten was then reportedly seen crying and struggling to get up. The poor animal required veterinary care and is recovering in the home of a different guard who took it in.

According to a statement by Lt. Michael Tuntakit, a spokesperson for Avenal State Prison, the facility is currently looking into the allegations. So far, authorities have not confirmed that a guard hurt the kitten, but Tuntakit said that “if it was a staff member, we’ll hold that staff member accountable.”

Several animal welfare groups, including PETA and Feral Paws Rescue Group, have taken notice of these allegations and are demanding justice. According to Kristin Rickman, emergency response division manager for PETA, “We’ll be following up. We’d like to find out what happened. We’d like assurances that it won’t happen again.”

This cruelty is alarming, especially because the remnants of a feral cat colony reside near the prison. This means that numerous feral cats are at risk of similar abuse, or worse. Furthermore, the presence of a violent guard in the correctional system means that inmates could also be at risk. Sign the petition below to demand that the prison find and fire the person responsible as quickly as possible.

Dear Mr. Fagundes,

A prison guard has been accused of kicking a kitten high up into the air, resulting in a broken leg. Several inmates reportedly saw the kitten crying and struggling to get up. The kitten was taken to the veterinarian, where it required treatment. It is now recovering at the home of a female prison guard, who kindly took it in.

Especially considering that there are more feral cats in the area, this guard must be found and punished before he can do more harm. Furthermore, a guard with violent tendencies is a threat to the welfare of inmates. We, the undersigned, demand that the person responsible is identified and prosecuted.
