Condemn Zoo for Killing Four Lions

Target: Denmark Prime Minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt

Goal: Condemn the Copenhagen Zoo for killing four lions

The Copenhagen Zoo in Denmark sparked anger all over the world in February when officials killed a healthy 18-month old giraffe. As if that didn’t cause enough outrage, according to the New York Times, the zoo decided to euthanize four more animals in April. This time they killed four healthy lions to clear some space for a new male lion. The zoo’s decision caused a huge public backlash with some even calling Copenhagen Zoo officials “murderers.” The zoo defended the killing of the four lions by saying that they wanted to save genetic purity of the animals in their facilities. They were afraid that the new male lion would prey on the cubs and breed with one of the female lions that were his offspring, which would cause inbreeding.

The reason for the large amount of criticism from the public is the fact that the zoo breeds additional animals unnecessarily. If the zoo were to stop breeding from happening in the first place, then they would not have to end animals’ lives short. According to CBC World News, many animal activists feel that it is unethical to dispose of animals when they don’t fit the needs of the zoo anymore. Europe is more willing to euthanize animals for the sake of conserving genetic diversity. American zoos would rather use the methods of contraception to prevent inbreeding.

The zoo felt its first round of backlash when it shot a giraffe in the head and fed it to a group of lions while children watched. They offered the same argument for that incident that they did for this one.

Please sign this petition to show the zoo that it is wrong to kill perfectly healthy animals.

Dear Denmark Prime Minister, Helle Thorning-Schmidt,

It is sad to hear more news of animal deaths coming from the Copenhagen Zoo in Denmark. Last month, we heard about the death of a giraffe and now we are saddened by the news of the culling of four lions. Animal rights activists in America and Europe are both angry over the animal deaths, and it shows a divide on animal euthanasia. The argument of inbreeding is understandable, but can also be addressed in other ways. Instead of letting animals freely breed and then killing them, why not use effective and proven contraception methods? This will fix the problem of inbreeding and also stop the zoo from having to get rid of animals.

As the Prime Minister of Denmark, please punish this zoo for killing perfectly healthy animals and get them to use other methods to prevent inbreeding.

Another heinous act that was legal, this is so wrong when humans have the right to kill non human animals when they decide it is necessary.

  2. Cecily Colloby. says:

What is wrong with this Zoo???? More importantly, what is wrong with the lunatic in charge?? All they seem to do is kill animals when they’re supposed to be protecting them. After the huge outcry when they murdered the giraffe, you would imagine they’d think twice about killing more animals but they are just sticking two fingers up to the rest of the world. CLOSE THIS ZOO DOWN!!!

  3. Denmark is starting to make a real name for itself with its blatant lack of regard for animals & poor animal protection laws. Keep going like this Denmark & you’ll rate right up there with China, Japan, Canada & Romania. As for this zoo, close the damn place down – they are a disgrace!

Denmark, you are going somewhere you will not be able to return from if you don’t stop harming animals and allowing it in your laws, RIGHT NOW. You have crossed the line

  6. Norma Whittaker says:

Killing animals in a zoo??? How can anyone be so cruel to a living being? These poor animals have a life of imprisonment and then they are murdered. What reason??? Sanctuaries offered to take them but you chose murder instead . Poor lack of judgement . Yes you rank up there with Canada and China as cruel animal abusesers with NO consience .

  7. Seriously SHUT this down NOW!!!!!! Obviously Copenhagen Zoo has no regards for any of the animals lives! This is bull sh!t!!! How can this become a world-wide spread case yet NOTHING has been done about shutting down this zoo……
