Commend President Obama for Protecting Whales

Iceland WHales

Target: President Barack Obama of the United States of America

Goal: Encourage the protection of whales in all waters

President Barack Obama of the United States of America has recently requested that Iceland stop whaling for commercial purposes, and instead move to ‘whale watching.’ This request goes so far as to determine the United States relationship with Iceland based upon whether or not Iceland stops commercial whaling. Iceland has been exceeding catch levels that are beyond what is considered sustainable; Obama’s demand that Iceland stop whaling for commercial purposes is compassionate and intelligent.

Fin whales are the target of Iceland’s whaling efforts; the fin whale is listed as critically endangered, with struggling numbers put under heavy pressure by Iceland. Obama has urged Iceland to become a ‘whale watching’ nation; instead of whaling in order to produce whale meat for consumers, the request is that Iceland contributes to scientific research, education and conservation of whale species.

Iceland’s whaling is hurting the productivity of whale conservation. We are living in a critical time in the history of the world; our actions now determine the future of many species, including whales. President Obama has proven that he is an advocate for the whales and that he sits on the right side of history. Commend President Obama for his advocacy and attention to sustainability.

Dear President Obama,

I am writing to thank you for your dedication to whale conservation and sustainable ocean fishing practices. Your request for Iceland to stop whaling fin whales will be a game changer. Iceland has been whaling at an unsustainable level; this must stop and your influence will undoubtedly convince Iceland to leave the fin whales to live in peace.

I urge you to continue to stand up for those that have no voice. Unsustainable fishing practices, on all levels, are detrimental to the future of our planet and all of its inhabitants. We must urge all nations to adopt sustainable practices; the fin whales deserve to prosper, as do all creatures.
