Stop University’s Deer Slaughter Program

Stop University's Deer Slaughter

Target: David J. Skorton, President of Cornell University

Goal: Stop Cornell University’s deer slaughter program

Cornell University, one of the highest rated academic institutions in the United States, is implementing a severe program of deer slaughter. Cornell states that the trapping and killing of deer is due to ‘chronic overpopulation.’ If this is the case, there are far better methods to dissuade deer from entering the university grounds – all of which involve keeping the deer alive. Sign this petition and demand Cornell University stop the senseless massacre of innocent animals.

Cornell’s deer control program has been kept quiet: even members of the local community did not know it existed. It is reported that this extreme population management has been ongoing since 2007, conducted by trained employees who trap and kill the deer.

No consideration has been taken for the animals that are being slaughtered. Many deer that are killed are mothers, leaving frightened orphans to fend for themselves and to, likely, starve to death. There are more effective methods available to prevent deer from entering the university grounds: repellents, fences, and the restriction of natural food sources will drive deer away. The killing of these animals is completely unnecessary.

Sign this petition to pressure Cornell University to stop killing these beautiful animals, and to adopt new animal-friendly methods of population control on its grounds.

Dear Mr. Skorton,

I write to you with deep concern for your methods of controlling Cornell’s deer population. The slaughter of deer on your campus is completely unnecessary, as there are far better methods of population control, which I urge you to adopt.

When you kill a deer you may also be sentencing a foal to death. The young animal watches its mother die an agonizing death in a trap, and is left alone, frightened, and can no longer fend for itself.

Please use repellents, fences and other far more humane methods to keep deer off your lands. By restricting the deer from your grounds, you solve your overpopulation problem, and the deer are allowed to live happily somewhere else.

You are a prestigious university, but I will not stand by and let the senseless killing of these beautiful animals take place, especially when there are far superior methods of dealing with their overpopulation. End the killing now, and utilize the aforementioned methods to save the lives of countless animals.

  1. This killing is obscene, leaving baby dear to fend for themselves while watching their moms die. Shame on this school. They should go down in the books as being the most inhumane school. I am glad this info was released. Why don’t they spay the animals or put up a fence. Easier and cheaper to shoot them, huh??????

  2. Sheila Jefferson says:

    END this cruelty NOW!

  3. Why your university bother us hunters? ????????? Leave them alone so we need to hunt for our food. We hate you all very much!!!!

  4. Proof that people in college have mediocre brain functionning capacity. Killing innocent creatures is never a solution that someone smart would come up with.

  5. Romola Newport Romola Newport says:

This land belonged to non human animals before man took it from them, they have the right to live there with no interference from hunters.

  6. Stan Benton says:

This is a saddening piece of information to come out of Cornell; and I used to respect Cornell for their excellent academic reputation, and for their China study. But this is sick. How about capture, neuter, and release?

  7. Is that what they teach at the University? Killing animals is OK?? What’s wrong with these people????

  8. what the hell is wrong with society.. no one seems to have a heart anymore.. have respect for the animals. they have done nothing wrong to you.. these people must have a screw loose some where…what the hell ????????????

  9. human population is out of control, and no respect is given to the animal population.. animals were here first . and the humans came along and stuffed things up.

  10. I am writing to express my opposition to this cruelty.

This killing has been and is relentless, terribly cruel, and endanger and prevent students, residents, visitors, guests, from simply enjoying the presence of wildlife in this area.

I urge you to reconsider any ill-conceived plan to increase such a horrid and draconian slaughter — if a reduction in populations is needed, seek only non-lethal, humane methods, involving something similar to spaying and neutering, which could be provided by WILDLIFE EXPERTS IN THE NO-KILL MOVEMENT.

IF MONEY IS AN ISSUE, I am sure that everyone with rationality and compassion would be more than happy to donate to such a moral and noble endeavor.
