Target: Don Gaetz, President of the Florida State Senate
Goal: Enact a bill that would save tens of thousands of animals from euthanasia
A bill has been filed in Florida that would save innumerable animals from being euthanized. The bill – SB 1534, filed by Senator Joseph Abruzzo – proposes that animal control agencies or shelters will not be allowed to euthanize animals without first contacting all available shelters, agencies, and rescue groups who have indicated their readiness to accept those animals. Petition the Florida Senate to enact this bill, and save many animals from needless deaths.
The bill, known as the ‘Animal Rescue Act’, proposes that every establishment that euthanizes animals must maintain a registry of other organizations that are willing to take animals in. Moreover, the act provides certain safeguards in the form of data inspections, which rescue groups may be asked to provide to show the number of animals taken in, adopted, and currently in care. This gives animals further protection from groups that may use this bill to hoard animals for their own purposes.
This bill could mean that tens of thousands of animals are spared death at animal shelters or animal control agencies. If these organizations could be legally bound to search all available options to find animals a home before they are euthanized, this must be passed into law.
Sign this petition to save the lives of tens of thousands of animals from unnecessary death in shelters, and give them the opportunity of a new life.
Dear Mr. Gaetz,
I am writing with regards to bill SB 1534, the ‘Animal Rescue Act’, proposed by Senator Joseph Abruzzo. This bill would save tens of thousands of lives by giving animals the opportunity to be relocated to willing organizations before they are euthanized. I urge you to vote in favor of this bill, granting animals that are destined to die another chance at life.
If the bill became law, it would mean that all animal control agencies or shelters would have to keep a registry of other shelters, agencies, and rescue groups, and contact all available organizations who are willing to take in a particular animal. In this way, animals that would normally be killed without question could be relocated; many would go on to find happy, new homes.
Similar laws have already been established in Delaware, California, and many others. These states recognize that the senseless killing of animals is not something to be proud of, and have shown their humanity when dealing with their animal population.
Please ensure this bill becomes law, and save the lives of tens of thousands of animals.
