Success: Anti-Puppy Mill Bill Passed

Target: Senator Kevin de León, President pro Tempore, California Senate

Goal: Support the decision of the California Senate to pass the Pet Rescue and Adoption Act.

Legislation protecting dogs, cats, rabbits, and other innocent pets in California from the cruelty and neglect that results from commercial breeding and “puppy mills” has passed in the Senate. Thanks in part to petitions like this one, the bill—AB 485 Pet Rescue and Adoption Act—was unanimously passed in a 32-0 vote.

The Pet Rescue and Adoption Act will require pet stores to source their animals from local shelters. This is not only a solution to the problem of overcrowding in many shelters, but will also stop stores  from doing business with cruel puppy mills and other such high-volume commercial breeding facilities. The bill is a landmark step in ending the vicious cycle of abuse and neglect that comes with high-volume commercial breeding, as innocent animals are bred to be sold, end up in shelters, and in many cases are eventually euthanized. Sign below to support the CA Senate’s commitment to protecting these pets.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator de León,

The Senate’s unanimous vote to pass AB 485 was a huge victory for the humane treatment of innocent animals. It is a landmark step in combatting the cruelty of puppy mills by shutting California’s doors to such inhumane businesses.

The Pet Rescue and Adoption Act will also give shelter animals a better chance of being adopted, not to mention better conditions in the interim, as the crisis of overpopulation in local animal shelters is also combatted. I would like to thank the Senate for passing this vital measure and, in the words of Assembly member Patrick O’Donnell, “defending the voiceless.”

Sincerely,

YES, AND WE NEED THIS IN EVERY STATE IN THE UNION!
    LONG OVERDUE!!!

  2. Lynne Sapienza says:

I agree stronger laws needed for animal abusers. Studies show animal abusers move on to people abuse.

  3. I believe this bill would not be of much use for stopping puppy mills, as there is no guarantee that the pet stores would comply with it and do not sell puppy mills pets. The better measure would have been banning the sale of animals, which would have encourage people to adopt them from shelters.

  4. We need to totally ban the sale of live animals in any store along with make it illegal to breed animals for sale….
This should be the law in all states..

  5. I sure hope this does cover more than just dogs.
