Save the Endangered Monk Seal

Target: Jim Kurth, Director of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service

Goal: Save the monk seal from extinction.

The monk seal population has dropped to under 2,000 and is getting smaller every day. In addition to being hunted by poachers for centuries, this species is slowly starving to death due to overfishing, and their habitat is being destroyed by ocean pollution. Additionally, their habitat is encroached upon by humans taking up residence on the coast, leading to even more pollution, fishing, and overall disruption of the seals’ lives.

Aquatic wildlife is in more and more danger every day due to climate change, pollution, and overfishing; the monk seal is just one of many species that could be gone from this planet within the next year if this continues. Despite the many protections in place for these creatures, it is only a matter of time before they are completely wiped out, and we cannot allow this to happen.

There have been talks among the citizens of Princeville, Hawaii regarding conservation of the monk seal, including a presentation at a local library on the subject. We must ensure that this message spreads further, to ensure the protection of the remaining seals. Sign this petition to demand stronger protection of this species.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Kurth,

Monk seals are in severe danger of extinction, their population number down to 2,000 and still shrinking. This species has been hunted for centuries, and combined with the loss of their habitat and the effects of pollution, it is only a matter of time before they are completely wiped out.

Conservation efforts are currently being discussed in Hawaii, but that is only the first step. You must ensure that these conservation efforts are supported and successful, in addition to issuing stronger protections for the species. The monk seal is just one of many aquatic wildlife species in danger of extinction due to climate change and other factors, and we must make every effort to ensure its survival.

Sincerely,
