Target: Samantha Shelton, President of Furkids animal shelter
Goal: Thank animal shelter for fundraising effort to remain no-kill and make dramatic improvements
After receiving a $100,000 matching grant donation, the Georgia animal shelter Furkids put forth an amazing fundraising effort to find matching funds so they could begin a total renovation of the property. They not only matched it, they exceeded it and created one of the best no-kill shelters in the country. For their incredible effort to keep animals safe and happy, Furkids deserves our gratitude.
Nearly a year ago Millard Choate, President of Choate Construction Company, and his wife lost their beloved Weimaraner Sadie. As a gift to his wife and a memorial for Sadie, Choate presented Furkids with the donation. All that was left was for them to match it. The staff, along with dozens of volunteers, began a monumental fundraising effort that resulted in a $400,000 renovation that began only a few months later.
The new space will soon be open under the name “Sadie’s Place.” President of the shelter Samantha Shelton said, “Millard Choate’s contribution is a significant financial gift to Furkids and an answered prayer for all of us who have been struggling with how to upgrade our dog shelter. What’s equally significant is that Millard’s gift goes far beyond money. This contribution is part of a love story – a dog’s love for his owner, a woman’s love for her dog, and a man’s love for his wife. We are sincerely touched by the depth of this gift and are so grateful for it.”
What is truly remarkable isn’t the donation itself, but what was done with it. Furkids, the largest no-kill shelter in Georgia, has already earned a reputation for its dedication to keeping animals out of high-kill shelters and animal control facilities. They make it a point to take in dogs and cats who are seriously ill or who have been overlooked by other rescue groups. Even during the renovation they refused to turn away animals, and instead, volunteers enlisted foster homes. Its new facility is yet another notch in their belt, with seven grass play yards, an HVAC system that provides fresh air, loads of new windows, a dedicated medical room, and a special room for people to meet their prospective family members.
Please take a moment to sign the petition below and thank Furkids for their tireless dedication to ensuring that all animals have a chance at a good life.
Dear Samantha Shelton,
Soon Furkids will be opening its new space “Sadie’s Place” complete with seven grass yards, a medical facility, and new equipment. Thanks to a donation from a generous benefactor and your incredible fundraising effort, many more animals will have a chance at finding their home and will be more comfortable while they wait, too.
Thank you so much for all the work you have done and continue to do to keep dogs and cats out of animal control facilities and high kill shelters. You have truly raised the bar to a much higher standard for animal welfare.
