Save Fireflies from Extinction

Target: Li Ganjie, Chinese Minister of Environmental Protection

Goal: Put tougher restrictions on firefly harvesting and breeding for attractions and theme parks.

This summer, a fantastic light show has wowed the residents of Beijing every night at the Tiankai Huahai scenic area as thousands of fireflies have made for a spectacular attraction. The only problem is that the fireflies shown are not native to the area and must either be bred or harvested for such events. Nationwide, theme park style firefly shows have become a phenomenon, and there is a real concern that these attractions are putting wild fireflies at risk.

China is home to over 100 known firefly species, with many more likely waiting to be discovered. Yet due to the country’s rapid urbanization, most children growing up in cities have never seen one of the glowing creatures, as the insects are particularly vulnerable to pollution. It is easy to see the appeal of firefly parks for this reason, but a troubling online market has also developed, involving the harvesting of fireflies from rural areas or those bred specifically for shows. Fireflies bred or captured for these attractions are usually not adapted for the region, and perish quickly as a result.

The nostalgic demand to see live fireflies should not be allowed to put wild fireflies at risk. Sign this petition to tell China’s environmental minister to enact tougher restrictions to put an end to the exploitation of these insects.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Ganjie,

The recent firefly show at Tiankai Huahai park in Beijing has highlighted a growing and troubling trend of nostalgia-based ecotourism involving these insects. The fireflies shown are not native to Beijing, and as such are either be harvested or bred to fuel the demand for such “natural” light shows.

China’s remaining fireflies must be protected from this over-exploitation or they may very well become extinct. The harvesting and online sale of these insects must be brought to an end and all firefly exhibits must be held accountable for ensuring that their attractions do not involve wild-caught or non-native species for the good of the ecosystem as a whole. Please do what you can to help ensure that fireflies will continue to light up the skies each summer in China for years to come.

Sincerely,

  1. Please stop this, Fireflies deserve their freedom, remember Hod is watching you

  2. Ohhh, I used to remember all the fun and wonder of seeing so many fireflies as a kid. Now I barely seen them. =[ We must save them from extinction because they deserve the right to live and also so the next generation can enjoy them.

  3. We need the Fireflies! They must be saved from extinction. They deserve the right to live, the same as you and me. Save them for furture generations!
