Target: President Obama
Goal: Ask President Obama to condemn Iceland’s international trade in whale meat and products
Over the last few years, animal welfare groups have asked President Obama to impose economic sanctions against Iceland due to its continued whaling activities. These activities are in defiance of a ban on the international commercial trade of whale products. Urge our President to take action and discourage whaling.
The U.S. Department of the Interior recently certified to President Obama that Iceland’s trading of whale meat diminishes the effectiveness of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). President Obama now has sixty days to decide what action the United States will take in response.
“We applaud U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell for taking this important action to protect whales, and we encourage President Obama to further demonstrate U.S. leadership in whale conservation by taking the next step and imposing trade sanctions against Iceland,” said Anne Lieberman, Executive Director, World Society for Protection of Animals USA. “This is a critical time to send a clear message that whaling is no longer tolerated.”
Iceland’s ongoing whaling activities undermine worldwide efforts to conserve whale species. Only twenty-five years ago, whales were nearly driven to extinction by commercial whaling. Iceland’s activities are not only illegal but immoral. Ask President Obama to take action against Iceland.
Dear President Obama,
Please impose economic sanctions against Iceland due to its continued whaling activities in defiance of a ban on international commercial trade of whale productions. Not very long ago, whales were in danger of going extinct due to commercial whaling.
The U.S. Department of the Interior certified that under the Pelly Amendment to the Fisherman’s Protective Act of 1967, Iceland’s ongoing international trade in whale meat and products diminishes the effectiveness of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). You must take action against Iceland to protect whales and condemn their illegal whaling practices.
