Target: John Haroldson, Benton County Oregon District Attorney
Goal: Commend Oregon district attorney for commitment to animal rights
John Haroldson is the district attorney for Benton County, Oregon whose commitment to animal rights has earned him high praise from some of the nations leading animal rights organizations. Recently, The Animal Legal Defense Fund named Haroldson in the 2014 list of America’s Top Ten Animal Defenders. After receiving a grant from the Animal Legal Defense Fund lasting for three years, Haroldson founded a position in his office for the express purpose of prosecuting animal neglect and abuse cases in Oregon. This unique position is just one way Haroldson has demonstrated his unwavering devotion to the protection of Oregon’s pets, farm animals, and wildlife.
According to the Corvallis Gazette-Times, the local newspaper in Benton County, Oregon, “the position was filled in September by Jake Kamins, an attorney who previously prosecuted crimes against animals for Multnomah County.” Among Kamins’ most prominent cases was the prosecution of an alpaca farm in Polk County, Oregon where more than 200 alpacas were found dead or starving due to neglect. The owners of the ranch were charged with animal neglect. Because of swift action on the part of local authorities, 175 alpacas were saved after being transported to the Oregon State University School of Veterinary Medicine for treatment and recovery.
Too often, animal rights cases are not prioritized by the American criminal justice and judicial systems. The hard work and forward thinking actions of DA John Haroldson are to be commended, and hopefully, will become the gold standard for the handling of animal abuse cases by other prosecutors throughout the nation. Haroldson was recently quoted as proclaiming, “It’s a continuation of the approach of protecting the most vulnerable members of society, and that does not stop with people but continues with animals.” Thank him for the innovation and dedication he brings to the important issue of animal rights.
