Success: Endangered Wildcat Receives Conservation Funding

Scottish wildcat

Target: Colin McLean, Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund

Goal: Applaud efforts to save the delicate and endangered Scottish wildcat

The critically endangered Scottish wildcat has declined steadily in population from deforestation, human persecution, and interbreeding with domestic cats. This incredible animal is Britain’s last large mammal predator. Recently, nearly one million British pounds have been donated to protect and restore this unique cat. A previous ForceChange petition exposed the importance of saving the Scottish wildcat. Applaud the efforts of the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland for such a generous donation to this truly incredible creature.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has given £973,000 to Wildcat Action to implement the Scottish Wildcat Conservation Action Plan. The plan will focus on six critical areas of the wildcat’s habitat, community outreach, and conservation plans like land management. The biggest threat to the Scottish wildcat is breeding with feral domestic cats. The conservation plan seeks to prevent cross-breeding with feral cats by neutering and vaccinating domestic cats.

Pure Scottish wildcats have declined in population to less than 100 individuals in the wild. The Scottish wildcat might look like your average tabby but this majestic creature is the ultimate predator. Withstanding harsh Scottish winters and attempts at domestication, the Scottish wildcat is fearless, agile, patient, and resourceful.

By signing this petition, you are showing your gratitude to the Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland for funding the Scottish Wildcat Conservation Action Plan. This beautiful creature deserves every chance of success. Hopefully, these efforts will save this beloved cat species.

Dear Mr. McLean,

The Heritage Lottery Fund in Scotland has saved a beautiful and majestic species. The Scottish wildcat, Britain’s last large mammal predator, is on the track to extinction. Critically endangered, this interesting cat finally has a chance of survival thanks to your generous donation to Wildcat Action.

I want to thank you for standing up for such a precious creature. Cross-breeding with domestic cats, persecution by humans, and loss of habitat have made life hard for the Scottish wildcat. Because of the Scottish Wildcat Conservation Action Plan, this species has a huge chance of survival. The next five years will truly define this wildcat’s success. Luckily, your donation just might save this species from extinction. I urge you to continue to advocate for Scotland’s wild. I hope your efforts will inspire others to protect earth’s endangered creatures. I commend you and your organization for acknowledging the importance of the Scottish wildcat.
