Stop Torturous Animal Research at Universities

Target: Richard Bruton, Irish Minister of Education and Skills

Goals: Stop the use of live animals for research and experimentation at Irish universities.

Records show that a prestigious Irish university has spent hundreds of thousands of Euros over the past five years on a wide variety of research animals. According to the Irish Anti-Vivisection Society (IAVS), Trinity College Dublin has subjected nearly 110,000 rats, pigs, mice and other animals to painful and torturous medical experiments since 2012. Once these animals were no longer deemed useful, they were disposed of en masse.

The university has confirmed that it does conduct experimental research on animals, yet they claim to do so legally and “in keeping with the practice of all Irish universities.” The IAVS and other animal welfare groups are now calling for stricter regulations to prevent universities from having free reign on torturing animals in the name of medical research.

A growing body of evidence suggests that animal experimentation is unnecessary and leads to inconclusive results in medical research. Sign this petition to tell the Irish government that this cruel and barbaric practice does not belong in institutions of higher learning such as Trinity College.

Dear Minister Bruton,

As Minister of Education and Skills, you are likely aware of the fact that Irish universities and other educational institutions are legally permitted to conduct animal research and experimentation when there is “no alternative method” available. The recent revelation that over 110,000 animals were used in painful medical experiments at Trinity College Dublin over the past five years would suggest that animal testing was done frequently, and calls into question whether or not such tests are truly necessary.

Mounting evidence suggests that animal testing does not provide conclusive results in medical research. Furthermore, better models and simulations have been developed in recent years, rendering animal testing obsolete. We, the undersigned, urge you to make a stand for the animals and call for the end of animal testing at all Irish universities.
