Target: Bindi Irwin
Goal: Condemn young actress’ support of cruel marine parks
Bindi Irwin, daughter of Steve Irwin, the late Crocodile Hunter, has recently signed on as SeaWorld’s new youth ambassador. The young actress, whose mother, father, and grandfather are all advocates for animal conservation, agreed to the partnership despite overwhelming evidence of mistreatment and improper conditions at the popular marine park.
SeaWorld, which is home to dolphins and killer whales as well as a plethora of other marine species, has a notorious reputation for ill-treatment of the animals in their charge. Killer whales, which swim an average of 100 miles a day in the wild, are kept in concrete tanks only five times the whale’s own length. The whales exhibit signs of poor health such as collapsed dorsal fins and aggressive behavior. Both trainers and whales have been injured due to this aggression, with some even killed.
Many of the animals on display at SeaWorld were captured from the wild, and some were even snatched from their mothers at young ages. The amusement giant has been cited for several violations of the Animal Welfare Act, including unsafe enclosures, and the use of outdated veterinary tools.
Bindi, who announced the Generation Nature program, stated that she looked forward to influencing the younger generation to “get involved and be game-changers for wildlife and wild places.” Contrary to her statement, the 15 year old has publicly lent her support to one of the cruelest amusement venues in America. Your signature will condemn the hypocrisy of her partnership and encourage her to take a closer look at SeaWorld’s actions toward marine life.
Dear Bindi Irwin,
Recently, you announced your partnership with SeaWorld as a youth ambassador. Though your intentions to encourage animal conservation awareness to younger generations are admirable, you have lent your support to an amusement park that shows no concern for animal welfare.
SeaWorld acquires the majority of their animals from the wild at a young age- some are even taken from their families. Once they reach SeaWorld, they are doomed to cramped enclosures, forced performances, and health issues. The marine park has been cited several times for not complying with animal welfare regulations, and many animals have died due to unsafe tanks.
Considering the Irwin family’s contributions to animal conservation, a partnership with a cruel and profit-focused entity such as SeaWorld is a shock. I am disappointed by your support of SeaWorld, and ask that you take a few moments to look at the park’s animal welfare history in order to be fully informed of what you are now advocating.
