Commend Ship Crew For Saving Stranded Dog

Target: First Class Petty Officer Brian Essler, Bristol Bay Crew

Goal: Thank crew for bringing aboard a dog stranded on ice and returning it to its owners

A dog was recently rescued from a frozen lake by the crew of the Bristol Bay, a U.S. Coast Guard ice cutter ship. They spotted a group of animals that appeared to be foxes about four miles off the coast, and noticed that one animal was larger and seemed to be in distress. Crew members donned weatherproof gear and left the ship to go help the stranded animal. After removing the dog from the frozen surface of Lake St. Clair in Michigan, the crew fed the dog and gave it first aid care.

A crew member then disembarked from the ship to seek out veterinary aid from a local animal hospital. After arriving at a shelter, the dog made a quick recovery. After shelter staff learned that the dog had been reported missing, they contacted the dog’s owners. KC, the mixed breed dog, was reunited with its family and has returned home.

The dog, whose paws were bloody and scratched from digging burrows in the ice, may not have survived much longer without food, and could have fallen victim to predators in its exhausted state. The crew of the Bristol Bay arrived at the right time and acted quickly enough to save the stranded animal, likely saving its life. Applaud the quick thinking and compassion of the crew, which returned a stranded dog to its home.

Dear First Class Petty Officer Brian Essler,

Recently, a U.S. Coast Guard ice breaker tugboat, the Bristol Bay, stopped on the way to a mission to rescue a stranded dog. When a crew member spotted a dog in distress, three crew members left the ship to bring the dog on board. Once on the ship, the dog was given food, water, and first aid attention.

A crew member actually left the ship to transport the dog, KC, to an animal hospital, where it recovered. Staff matched the dog to one that was reported missing earlier, and contacted its owners. The dog, which may not have survived otherwise, is now safe at home with its family.

Thanks to the quick actions of the Bristol Bay crew, KC got a second chance. I commend your actions removing this stranded dog from the ice, and returning it to its home.
