Save Foxes from Cruel Death

Target: Lieutenant Governor of Virginia Ralph Northam

Goal: Encourage Virginia to pass a bill that would prohibit the cruel practice of fox penning

The use “fox pens” to train hunting dogs is a cruel and torturous practice in which dogs are released into fenced areas containing wild-caught foxes or coyotes. With no way to escape the pens, the foxes are hunted down and either maimed or ripped apart. Deaths are frequent, and hundreds of animals are subjected to this cruelty. Recently, however, the Virginia House of Delegates passed a bill that, should the Senate approve its passage, would prohibit fox penning. Sign this petition to urge the Virginia Senate to put an end to fox pens.

Though argued to be a traditional training method for hunting dogs, fox pens are completely unnecessary and inhumane. Wild animals are subjected to terrifying, often painful capture, transported for long distances without adequate care, and killed in brutal ways. Arguably just as cruel a bloodsport as dogfighting, fox penning has gained increasing criticism for its needless brutality, and has in fact been debated previously.

Should the proposed bill pass, new fox penning establishments will be prohibited from opening and existing ones will be phased out. The legislation will protect hundreds of foxes and coyotes that might otherwise have faced an inhumane death for sport, and sets an important precedent in the fight against cruelty toward wildlife.

However, passage hinges on the Virginia Senate’s decision. This is a vital piece of legislation for animal welfare, and it must be enacted to end the suffering of foxes and coyotes used in fox pens. Urge the Senate to pass this bill, and help protect foxes and coyotes from this cruel bloodsport.

Dear Lieutenant Governor Northam,

The Virginia House of Delegates recently made the right decision in passing a bill that would fully ban fox penning and the cruel practice associated with them. In fox penning, hunting dogs are released into fenced areas containing wild-caught foxes or coyotes, which are viciously mauled, often to death. This is a cruel and far outdated practice, and should be completely prohibited.

Therefore, I ask that the Senate afford this bill passage, and protect animals from inhumane treatment. Wildlife should be afforded the same welfare protections as domestic animals.

    What a hateful practice.

  2. I am very impressed with Ralph Northam, an honest politician (rare these days?), and a healer of human suffering. Let’s hope that he actively does all he can to end this sick practice of fox “penning” (torture and murder). Training man’s best friend to “hunt” in this manner, even if it was done without fox penning is sick enough.

  3. Humans are the REAL animals. Just how many inhumane, horrific ways can be thought of to torture the innocent and the defenseless? It seems endless. I’m getting to the point I’d rather spend time with animals than my own kind.

I really can’t believe that anyone could even think that pinning isn’t cruel. I hope a fox bites one of them.

  9. Tom walker says:
