Target: Ed Brodsky, State Attorney, Florida 12th Judicial Circuit
Goal: Ensure prosecution for alleged animal abuser
Gizmo the puppy has a history of seizures and various medical problems. One night, while Ephrian Myles slept, Gizmo began to suffer a seizure; he began to cry, whine, and bark. Instead of rushing to the 3-month-old Dachsund-Chihuaha mix’s aid, Myles doused him head to toe in hot sauce as punishment. Gizmo began wheezing and his breathing became labored; his eyes swelled shut. Luckily, the dog’s owner, Myles’ girlfriend saw the cruelty and rushed Gizmo to a nearby fire station, where he received excellent care. Gizmo is expected to make a full recovery. However, this kind of cruelty must not stand.
Ephrian Myles was arrested that night for aggravated animal cruelty, a felony in Florida, and his bond was set at $5,000. Although it is commendable that law enforcement acted swiftly and decisively, it is crucial that this case not be forgotten. Felonious animal cruelty in Florida is punishable with up to 5 years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.
It is crucial that Ed Brodsky, the State Attorney for the Florida 12th Judicial Circuit and the Sarasota Area take this crime seriously and prosecute it as such. In the past, Brodsky has made strong efforts to strengthen laws against animal abuse and neglect. He has stressed in campaigns his commitment to stopping animal cruelty. Urge him to not abandon this commitment to animals, and to ensure that Ephrian Myles learns that torturing an animal is never acceptable.
Although, Gizmo the puppy is out of harm’s way and is going to make a complete recovery, not all victims of animal abuse are so lucky. He was an innocent victim of senseless cruelty, and his abuser should be held accountable. Commend prosecutor Ed Brodsky’s commitment to animal welfare and demand he take this case as seriously as he has taken animal abuse cases in the past.
Dear Ed Brodsky,
Ephrian Myles was arrested Sunday, February 23rd on charges of felony aggravated animal cruelty for dousing his girlfriend’s puppy, Gizmo, with hot sauce. Gizmo the puppy suffered immense pain that caused his eyes to swell shut and his breathing to slow; he was in grave peril. All Gizmo did to deserve this abuse was suffer from a seizure, causing him to yelp in fear.
I am writing today to urge you to prosecute this animal abuser today. Your previous work to strengthen anti-animal cruelty laws is admirable. I am asking that you continue that commitment to the pets of Florida in taking this case as seriously as possible.
