Shut Down Roadside Zoo Accused of Animal Abuse

Target: Marie-France Lalonde Minister of Community Safety, Ontario, Canada

Goal: Close zoo where owners were reportedly caught on camera admitting to animal abuse.

A video recently released by animal welfare activists appears to show animal abuse by the owners and staff of a roadside zoo in Ontario, Canada. The video, taken by a former employee of the zoo, shows animals having their mouths pried open in an attempt to force them to bare their teeth. It also seems to show the owner of the zoo and his son admitting to beating a lion cub for training purposes.

According to Camille Labchuk, executive director of  rights group Animal Justice, the zoo also tears animals away from their mothers at a young age to be used as selfie props. A zoo owner was reportedly caught on camera admitting that he lied to the public about the circumstances under which a baby cougar came into the zoo’s custody. He allegedly said that generally, cubs are only taken in extreme circumstances such as when their mothers are unable to care for them, but this cub was taken from a healthy mother for no reason other than profit.

This type of for-profit exploitation of animals is unacceptable. Animals should not be forced into captivity for the entertainment of humans. Sign the petition below to demand that this cruel roadside zoo is closed, and that its animals are retired to accredited sanctuaries where they may live out their lives free from abusive captivity.

Dear Ms. Lalonde,

Video recently taken at a roadside zoo appears to show extensive animal cruelty. The video, allegedly taken at Papanack Zoo by a former employee, shows raccoons and skunks being manhandled for photos. Their mouths are pried open and they are forced into unnatural poses. The video also seems to show zoo owners admitting to beating a lion cub in order to train it. Zoo owners were also reportedly caught admitting to lying to the general public about the circumstances under which a baby cougar came into their care.

If these allegations are true, it would mean that the zoo is exploiting and enslaving animals for the sake of human entertainment and profit. In today’s world, this is unacceptable. We, the undersigned, urge you to do everything in your power to ensure that this cruel zoo is closed and that the animals it houses are surrendered to accredited sanctuaries.
