Thank Hollywood Star for Feeding Thousands of Homeless Pets

animal shelter

Target: Ellen DeGeneres, television host, actress, and animal activist

Goal: Applaud Ms. DeGeneres’ work supporting homeless pets and raising awareness for animal shelters

The opportunity to host the Oscars–perhaps the most famous movie awards show on the planet–would be a big deal for any celebrity. In 2014 the honor went to Ellen DeGeneres, who aside from her work as a comedian and television host has also been an active supporter of animal rights. In a move worthy of a standing ovation, she used her role as awards show host to provide 200,000 meals to homeless pets.

Twenty celebrities who didn’t leave the Oscars with an award received ‘swag bags’ full of gifts valued at $80,000, and DeGeneres made sure one of the most expensive items was in fact a gift of giving. Recipients can each donate a 10,000-meal certificate to their favorite animal shelter, courtesy of Halo, Purely for Pets, the comedian’s pet food company. As reported by Mother Nature Network, DeGeneres once dreamed of being a veterinarian, and has remained deeply committed to helping homeless pets. “I believe that by working together, we can find good homes for the millions of homeless and abandoned pets out there,” she says.

Halo, Purely for Pets donates 1.5 million meals to shelter pets every year. By showcasing this incredible mission at the Oscars, DeGeneres also raised awareness about the plight of pets without homes. Commend Ms. DeGeneres for supporting shelter animals in need of tender, loving care.

Dear Ms. DeGeneres,

Seeing you host the Oscars was a treat, but I am even more impressed by your generosity. I was delighted to hear that you helped donate 200,000 meals to animals living in shelters…and even more so to learn that this represents just a fraction of the meals donated every year by your pet food company, Halo, Purely for Pets!

Many celebrities use Oscar night to boost their visibility, appealing to fans and movie producers. Millions of dollars in precious jewelry accompany the stars on their walk down the red carpet. But you turned the evening into an awareness-raising event of a different sort, showcasing the plight of pets in shelters.

The Recession has led to a huge increase in pet homelessness, and many shelters struggle to keep up with the demand in a time when donations are often harder to come by. Your company’s generous gift of pet meals will make a huge difference, and by inviting celebrities to donate meal certificates to their favorite shelters you have connected them more directly to the issue.

Thank you for sharing your love of animals with the world on Oscar night, and for all you do in support of homeless pets.

  7. Thank you Ellen for your kindness towards shelter pets! Please also use your celebrity to help end laboratory testing on animals and educating people about animal cruelty in Greece. The recession there has caused many animals to slowly starve to death and experience animal cruelty by ignorant people there.
