Condemn Farm for Feeding Dead Piglets to Fellow Pigs

Target: Iron Maiden Hog Farm

Goal: Condemn hog farm for feeding dead piglets to fellow pigs

The Humane Society of the U.S. recently released a video that revealed a disturbing practice used by a farm in Kentucky to prevent disease. Iron Maiden Hog Farm in Owensboro, Kentucky has been grinding up the intestines of the piglets who die from the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), and feeding them to the other sows. Though the farm claims this prevents the spread of PEDV, it is a truly frightening, disgusting practice, and needs to be stopped.

PEDV has become an epidemic and indeed a problem for hog farmers, but the practice of feeding piglets’ intestines to other pigs is not the answer. In fact, the practice is illegal according to Kentucky law, which says dead pigs cannot be fed to live pigs. If Iron Maiden Hog Farm is looking for a real solution to the spread of PEDV, they should look to the way they house and treat their sows. Similar to many other hog farms, they are confined to narrow stalls and live out depressing lives in cramped conditions. It’s conditions like these which spread disease.

Tell Iron Maiden Hog Farm that this kind of animal treatment is despicable and will not be tolerated. There are other ways to prevent the spread of disease that treat animals in a humane, dignified way.

Dear Iron Maiden Hog Farm,

A recently released video shows your farm engaging in an extremely disturbing practice of feedings dead piglets’ intestines to other sows. Though you claim this to be your farm’s attempt at stopping the spread of the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, it is an inhumane practice that is illegal according to Kentucky state law.

I am writing to urge your farm to end this practice, and to consider other viable alternatives. To begin, addressing the deplorable living conditions of your sows could help alleviate the rapid spread of disease. I hope that you will consider reevaluating how you treat the pigs on your farm, and give more careful thought to the way you address issues that arise in the future.

    Go vegan!

  3. Really?
Perhaps a tip off about these idiots should have been “Iron Maiden” farm ??
When are people going to make the change to Veganism, a far healthier lifestyle for you besides the obvious impact on animal life.
I sleep better at night knowing I haven’t contributed to one single death of an animal for my food.
What keeps me awake is having to share this planet with uncaring selfish a-holes.

  4. Barbara Chichester says:

Pigs are one of the most abused animals on the planet.
The way farms treat them is despicable. People should
be put in their place and know the horror they go through.

  5. This is just sickness and evil. What is wrong with these ‘people’. I gave up eating any portion of a pig at all after reading about their abuse. I have a few friends who are waivering, this should convince them to give it up as well. I am embarrassed and disgusted that humans can do these things.

  6. I am vegan so I have a pure conscious when it comes to eating animals. I don’t need to be concerned about what I eat, and what the animal that i eat, ate. Go vegan.
