Ban Captive Hunting of Lions

Target: Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma, President of South Africa

Goal: Ban captive hunting of lions in Africa

Lions in Africa are being bred in captivity only to be sent off to be hunted by tourists who pay large sums of money to kill them. Lion breeders make as much as $25,000 per lion killed in the hunt. The success rate of hunting captivity-bred lions is over 99 percent, almost guaranteeing a kill for those who pay for the hunt.

These lions are bred legally on farms and are used for profit almost immediately. Breeders will allow tourists to play and cuddle with the cubs until they are adult cats, where they are then sent off for their eventual death. This practice is wrong and describes a pitiful life for these lions since they are marked for an early death the moment they are born onto these farms.

Many in Africa have argued that the hunting industry contributes a large amount to Africa’s economy and without it, the economy would be in trouble. However, a report from Economists at Large, a team of economists in Australia, stated that less than three percent of revenue is contributed to the local community by hunting companies. Canned, or captive, hunting of lions is not worth the small revenue that local communities see.

African lions are classified as “vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) but should be listed as “endangered” under the Endangered Species Act, which would then grant lions stricter rules in regards to hunting them. Lions should not be bred and raised on these farms only to meet a cruel and young death. Please sign the petition below to urge Africa’s government to ban this cruel practice.

Dear President Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma,

Currently, lions in Africa are being bred and raised on farms and sent off to be hunted at an early age so that tourists can enjoy slaughtering them. Canned hunting is disturbing and should be stopped immediately.

While the economy in Africa relies on tourism for much of its revenue, studies have shown that the hunting of these lions does not contribute a substantial amount and local communities hardly see any of this revenue. The number of lions has been sinking lower and lower and they should be listed as “endangered” in order to gain more protection.

I hope you understand just how sad this practice is of raising lion cubs only to be hunted for an early death by tourists looking for a “trophy.” Please end this cruelty and ban the canned hunting of lions.

What an abhorrent, disgusting act allowed and performed by pathetic, immoral, unethical cowards! If they have the need for inhumane, sadistic, bloodlust actions, let them hunt each other. It would be no loss to the world but a benefit.

  4. A piece was aired on TV (NYC) regarding this horror … I learned the following — “they are not hunters, they are COLLECTORS.”

Anybody that hunts and murders innocent animals are SCUM they are evil bastards and I personally would like to put them all in a lions den and leave them. Some of the human race are such greedy bastards they are such selfish pieces of shit and I hate the lot of them. Breeding lions and then letting them go to be murdered by some pompous pratt is just disgracefull, as it breeding pheasants etc same again so some mindless pompous pratt can murder them. Hunting should be banned world wide it is just dispickable and very very cruel.

  7. Aimee Cortez says:

I am 100000000% against hunting. If these stupid, idiotic, hunter morons give out the reason that hunting helps out balance the wild animal populations, they are dumb since these animals do so theirselves naturally and that’s why there is a darn food chain!!! The circle of life!!!

  8. Brian Gorman says:

    Fucking cowards!!!!

  9. I would be okay with it if it was fair, in that I would pay $25,000 to shoot these sadistic hunters in a canned hunt and take a picture with my trophy. Then, I would send the picture to their family and post it all over the web. If killing is allowed, then everyone should be able to do it. If they could feel the pain that these poor, innocent lions feel when they are dying, they wouldn’t ever consider killing them.
