Target: Rhode Island Representative Raymond Gallison
Goal: Encourage Rhode Island congress to pass legislation that bans abusive elephant training tools
Circus elephants are subjected to horrific abuse as they are “trained” to perform humiliating stunts. Bullhooks are the most popular tool used to poke, prod and pierce the sensitive skin of elephants to manipulate the animals into behaving a certain way. These torture devices inflict severe pain and should be illegal.
Rhode Island Representative Raymond Gallison recently introduced a bill which would ban the use of bullhooks in his state. A bullhook is a stick with a hook at one end which is wielded to hurt elephants into submission. These powerful, intelligent animals not only suffer physical abuse as a result of bullhooks, as the training tools also cause elephants severe mental trauma. This important legislation also bans the continuous chaining of elephants which will greatly improve the lives of the animals.
BornFreeUSA.org, a resource website for animal activism, details the atrocities that are caused by bullhooks, explaining, “[Elephants skin] is so delicate that an elephant can feel the pain of an insect bite. A bullhook can easily inflict pain and injury to these areas and trainers often embed the hook in the soft tissue behind the ears, inside the ear or mouth, in and around the anus, and in tender spots under the chin and around the feet.”
According to the Humane Society of the United States, Gallison stated, “This legislation affords Rhode Island the opportunity to protect elephants from this barbaric and outdated training device, the bullhook, from being used upon these majestic animals, and helps to insure their safety and welfare. Rhode Island will be joining other cities that have prohibited this practice. This legislation affirms our state’s commitment to protecting animals, who cannot speak for themselves.”
We must show our support for this legislation and encourage Representative Gallison to do everything in his power to ensure that bullhooks are banned in Rhode Island.
Dear Representative Raymond Gallison,
I was pleased to learn that you introduced a bill that would ban the use of bullhooks in Rhode Island. These torture devices have been used to abuse elephants for far too long and I applaud your efforts to prohibit their use in your state.
As you know, a bullhook is a stick with a hook at one end which is wielded to hurt elephants into submission. These powerful, intelligent animals not only suffer physical abuse as a result of bullhooks, as the training tools also cause elephants severe mental trauma.
I am writing to you today to show my support for this important legislation and to encourage you to do everything in your power to ensure that the great state of Rhode Island bans the use of bullhooks.
