Shut Down Barbaric Monkey Stage Show

Target: Republic of Korea Environment Minister Yoon Seong-kyu

Goal: Shut down barbaric stage show that involves the abusive training and forced performance of monkeys

Undercover animal activists recently revealed the barbaric treatment of primates at “Monkey School,” a cruel stage show in South Korea where animals are dressed as children and forced to perform handstands, jump through hoops, and ride tricycles. In order to ensure that the monkeys perform each trick flawlessly, the trainers drag and hit the animals until they are too terrified to make a mistake.

When the monkeys are not being forced to perform or suffering through incredibly cruel training practices, they are left in cramped, dirty cages without companionship. One monkey was even found dead in its cage, a pool of blood around its head and the cause of death unknown. Sadly, these squalid living quarters are far preferable to the horrific treatment the monkeys must endure once they are released from their small wire cages. Witnesses reported seeing the trainers dragging and hitting the defenseless animals. One trainer even bound a monkey’s hands behind its back. When the terrified monkey ran away shrieking and fell on its face, the laughing trainer retrieved the monkey, yanking it by its neck and coming dangerously close to choking it to death and/or severing its spinal cord.

Animals used for entertainment endure severe physical and psychological trauma and the trainers show no compassion or understanding of the pain and terror they are inflicting upon these gentle creatures. Thankfully, Korean Congresswoman Hanna Chang has proposed a Zoo Act that would establish animal welfare standards and prohibit circus-like animal performances like the ones that primates are forced to participate in at Monkey School.

By signing this petition, you will be urging government officials to pass the Zoo Act to help save captive monkeys from being tortured and killed for the purpose of entertainment.

Dear Minister Yoon Seong-kyu,

I was appalled to learn of the cruel training practices and deplorable living conditions at South Korea’s performing monkey attraction known as “Monkey School.” Undercover footage recently showed trainers dragging, hitting and yanking the primates, threatening to choke them to death or severe their spinal cords. Terrified monkeys that tried to flee were retrieved by their abusive trainers, who were recorded laughing at the poor animals’ inability to escape.

The trainers at Monkey School show no compassion or understanding of the physical and psychological trauma they are inflicting upon these innocent animals, and we simply cannot allow this abuse to continue. Harming animals in the name of entertainment is completely unacceptable in a modern, civilized society, which is why I am urging you to pass the Zoo Act and help protect captive animals in Korea.
