Commend Grocer for Advancing Pig Welfare

Target: Delhaize America

Goal: Commend grocer for requesting animal welfare reports from pork suppliers

Delhaize America, the United States’ ninth largest grocer, recently announced that it will now require its pork suppliers to produce reports regarding their progress in eliminating the use of gestation crates from their pork supply chains. Delhaize has more than 1,500 locations under Food Lion, Hannaford and Bottom Dollar brands located throughout the United States.

In a news release the company said, “Consistent with its commitment to animal welfare, Delhaize America is encouraging supplier efforts to eliminate gestation stall housing for sows and move to open pen solutions. The company is asking all suppliers to report in 2014 on their progress in this direction.”

Delhaize is one of sixty companies working to eliminate gestation crates from their supply chain throughout the pork industry. Other major brands include McDonald’s, Burger King, Safeway, Target, Costco, and Oscar Mayer.

Gestation crates, or sow stalls, are widely used throughout the pork industry. Sows are kept in small crates throughout most of their lives. They cannot turn around or lie down. Sows kept in gestation crates show signs of learned helplessness and do not react if poked or a bucked of cold water is poured over them. Other studies have shown that sows act in ways that indicated boredom in gestation crates.

The quality of life that animals have before they are slaughtered is very important. Commend Delhaize America for moving away from suppliers who use gestation crates.

Dear Delhaize America,

Thank you for your support in getting sows out of gestation crates. Requiring your suppliers to show that they are moving away from gestation crates is a great step towards eliminating them altogether.

Thank you for taking animal welfare seriously. Hopefully more major corporations will look to your example and make steps towards eliminating suppliers that use gestation crates as well.
