Don’t Allow National Park to Slaughter Mountain Goats

Target: Louise Johnson, Chief of Resource Management, Olympic National Park, Washington

Goal: Do not allow mountain goats to be shot on sight as part of a population management program.

Olympic National Park in Washington State is currently considering a plan that would allow park officials to shoot mountain goats as a means of controlling their population. The goats, which are not native and were introduced to the Olympic Peninsula in the 1920s for hunting purposes, are seen as a potential threat to human visitors and to the park’s fragile ecosystem.

While the mountain goat population should be managed, there are better alternatives to shooting these creatures. Relocating the goats to the North Cascades, where they are native, would help bolster the dwindling goat populations in that region. Additionally, reintroducing native predators such as wolves, which were eliminated from the Olympic Peninsula in the 19th century, could also help manage goat populations.

Shooting goats on sight is an inhumane way to address this serious issue, and overlooks larger conservation goals and discussions that should be happening. Sign this petition to tell park officials that lethal means of control should not be on the table.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Johnson,

The ongoing discussion regarding the mountain goat population in Olympic National Park is important and necessary. Mountain goats are not native to the park, and their presence has strained the local ecosystem. However, using lethal means, including shooting goats, to control the population is inhumane and unnecessary.

We urge you to consider nonlethal alternatives to managing the mountain goat population in your park, including relocating these animals to areas where they are native. We also ask that you consider other options, such as reintroducing native predators such as wolves, which would more efficiently restore the area’s natural balance in the long term.

Sincerely,

It seems the people in positions of making decisions about animals are getting more stupid every day. So tired of this attitude of *kill everything if it’s a potential nuisance*. Typical knee jerk reaction. Or just a jerk reaction.

    • Correct. There’s a relocation answer in front of your noses- Get on with it and shove your guns where the sun don’t shine. What’s the problem? Blasted idiots.

    • But they don’t go for killing the biggest potencial nuisance in the planet>>>animals abusers, rapists, pedophiles, psychopaths…oh no poor things because they are humans and so what??? They are the most heinous things on Earth together with islamics those yes should be hunted everywhere, as they were introduced to this planet by the devil, to get horror, evil, nasty, violence and all that is evil and bad.

  2. Tina shurtleff says:

This is another attempt to boost hunting. These goats can and should be relocated. We need to take the guns out of animal welfare and use non lethal methods of wildlife control. 80% of Americans want our wildlife protected including apex predators like bears and wolves. Stop the killing

  3. KatWrangler WELCH says:

Why is killing the first answer to any problem?
These goats were put there for people to hunt, so I guess kill-happy people want their crack at these animals. Some things never change. I pray every day they do.

Relocate the goats to another area, and let them continue to live. Their ancestors got screwed – this is not the goats’ fault.

  4. Potatoe Beetles says:

Are these goats truly a menace, or is this another gov lie? Currently, wild equines are also being wiped out completely for ranching on our public lands! Their counts have been purposely doubled to show over-population. The BLM, trump administration, forest service, kill buyers, slaughter industry and hunters are all behind these wild animal kill- offs!

  5. Nooshin Perla says:

My God, would these people leave anything alone? Nothing on this earth is safe, because of those nasty moron people who can’t live with out hurting or destroying anything. God help us!!

  6. Cynthia Mattera says:

Do we just kill just to kill now a days? Seem like we just enjoy wiping out all predators that get in the way of animal agriculture! Some do it for fun ;(
