Target: Montana Governor Steve Bullock
Goal: Save free-roaming bison from being murdered
Believing wild bison to be a threat to local livestock, the Montana Board of Livestock has rejected a widely supported proposal that would have expanded the bison “tolerance zone” to the north and west of Yellowstone National Park. Now, more than 1,600 free-roaming wild bison are at risk of being needlessly slaughtered for unknowingly migrating out of their designated area.
An iconic animal of the American West, wild bison were nearly driven to extinction during the 19th century due to poorly regulated commercial hunting practices. Fortunately, the creation of environmental and government preserves such as Yellowstone National Park have greatly contributed to the bison population’s recent resurgence in the United States. Preventing bison herds from expanding into Montana would halt that resurgence and could be detrimental to their future.
The wild bison must increase the size of their habitat if they are to increase their numbers. Sadly, whenever they journey outside of Yellowstone’s protected lands, bison are brutally hunted and slaughtered. Convincing the Montana Board of Livestock to reverse its position and favor the expansion of year-round tolerance zones for Yellowstone’s bison would allow free-roaming bison to expand their habitat and help ensure their existence for generations to come.
By signing this petition, you will be urging Montana government officials to ensure that the Montana Board of Livestock reverses its recent vote against the expansion of the bison “tolerance zone” north and west of Yellowstone National Park. This simple solution would save thousands of wild bison from unnecessary slaughter and help protect one of the last genetically pure herds of bison currently living in North America.
Dear Governor Bullock,
I am writing to ask you to do everything in your power to ensure that the Montana Board of Livestock reverses its recent vote against the expansion of the bison “tolerance zone” to the north and west of Yellowstone National Park. Approximately 1,600 bison will be unnecessarily slaughtered if their habitat is not expanded, significantly halting their recent resurgence and potentially threatening the population of the herd.
Please do all that you can to extend the territory for wild bison and make it illegal to hunt and kill them outside of national parks. Bison should not be threatened with extinction for unknowingly migrating out of the protected lands of Yellowstone National Park.
