Crack Down on Inhumane Puppy Mills

Puppy Mills

Target: Mayor of Reno Bob Cashell

Goal: Prohibit the retail sale of inhumanely bred companion animals in Reno, Nevada pet stores

Puppy mills are cruel, inhumane factories that profit off the mistreatment of animals. Since the goal of puppy mills is to make money, the owners often cut corners in an effort to decrease costs and increase income. This greed leads to neglect, which can result in the innocent animals suffering from communicable or congenital diseases. These facilities supply the majority of retail pet stores, so the families who purchase puppies from these stores are unknowingly taking on a potentially huge emotional and financial burden. As a result, many of these innocent animals are surrendered to overcrowded shelters where they are eventually put to sleep. Banning the sale of cats and dogs that were bred in Nevada mills would be a huge step toward ending this inhumane business nationwide.

Current breeder regulations do not necessarily ensure a happy, healthy life for these animals, and USDA inspection reports have shown that some of Nevada’s puppy mills have continued to sell dogs to local pet stores even after the facilities had been penalized for violating the Animal Welfare Act. Establishing a local ordinance to prevent pet stores from selling cats and dogs bred for profit in mills would help put an end to the suffering of irresponsibly bred animals as well as reduce overpopulation and euthanasia in Reno animal shelters.

By signing this petition, you will be urging local government officials to enact an ordinance that would prohibit Reno pet stores from selling dogs and cats unless they come from shelters or rescue groups and help put an end to inhumanely managed puppy and kitten mills.

Dear Mayor Cashell,

I respectfully ask you to enact an ordinance that would prohibit the retail sale of inhumanely bred cats and dogs in Reno pet stores, many of which are abandoned and left to be euthanized in overcrowded animal shelters. The dogs raised in puppy mills often spend their entire lives in crowded, dirty cages for the sole purpose of producing as many puppies as possible for sale in pet stores. By preventing the retail sale of puppies from mills, pet stores would be more inclined to collaborate with local animal shelters to host in-store pet adoption events, saving thousands of animals from being unnecessarily killed.

This ordinance would help establish more humane living conditions for responsibly bred cats and dogs and would also alleviate a significant burden on shelters and rescue groups by increasing pet adoptions. Please do all that you can to save innocent animals from mistreatment in cruel puppy mills by supporting the proposed ordinance.
