Target: Alderman Penn Lemoine of Moreauville, Louisiana
Goal: Retract inhumane ban on pit bulls and Rottweilers
Very recently the town of Moreauville, Louisiana, made headlines for its newly passed ban on pit bulls and Rottweiler dogs. Three alderman along with the mayor make up the city’s board, and are therefore responsible for the decision that all pit bulls and Rottweilers within city limits must be removed by December 1st, or face euthanization. Understandably, this ban received heavy backlash from the rest of the country. In response to this backlash, Alderman Penn Lemoine told the press that the ban will likely be reversed.
Lemoine is shocked at the publicity the ban generated, which brought viral attention to Moreauville overnight. The city’s board believes that the rest of the country is overreacting about the ban. While being against breed discrimination is enough reason to celebrate this success, the fact that the voice of a collective people can change the lives of animals is even more reason to celebrate.
A major incentive for the ban’s backlash is the life of one young girl who relies on her pit bull, Zeus, for medical reasons. Zeus, a trained service animal, will alert other people in the home when the girl has spasms in the middle of the night. The girl is confined to a wheelchair with a halo brace to help persistent neck problems. Zeus helps his owner immensely, both physically and emotionally. The recently passed ban applies to Zeus, even though he is a trained service animal.
Sign this petition to urge Alderman Lemoine to go through with reversing the city’s inappropriate ban on pit bulls and Rottweiler and instead adopt mandatory leash laws.
Dear Alderman Lemoine,
Moreuville has been under the country’s magnifying glass for its unsound ban on pit bulls and Rottweilers. You were documented saying that the ban, which was scheduled to come into effect December 1st, may be overturned. I am writing to urge you and your three colleagues to overturn this discriminatory ban on misunderstood breeds.
This ban was considered due to complaints of pit bulls and Rottweiler running the streets, chasing adults and their children. Dogs of any breed running off leash does not point to a problem with the dogs, it is a problem with the owners. Please consider a mandatory leash law, heavily enforced, instead of banning certain breeds within city limits. Any breed of dog can become aggressive when provoked.
Banning pit bulls and Rottweilers is not the answer. Educating the people of the town on appropriate dog tethers and communication is extremely important. Please reverse your proposed ban on certain dog breeds and instead focus on the real problem at hand: irresponsible and neglectful owners.
