Success: Vietnam Agrees to Close Bear Bile Farms

Target: Cao Duc Phat, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam

Goal: Thank the Vietnamese government for agreeing on a national ban on bear bile farms.

Animal welfare group Animals Asia has successfully arranged an agreement with the Vietnamese government to ensure that the estimated 1,000 remaining Asian black bears are rescued from confinement and torture on so-called bear farms by 2020. With the help of this foundation and worldwide outcry against this cruel practice, as demonstrated through petitions such as this one from ForceChange, government officials have decided to close the legal loophole which has allowed bear bile farms to continue operating for the last decade.

Bear bile farming is a barbaric and unnecessary procedure that involves forcing bears to live in cramped enclosures sometimes referred to as “crush cages.” The bears may spend a decade or more trapped in these cages, enduring painful and invasive surgeries for their bile, a digestive fluid which folk tradition claims can treat a host of human ailments.

Following the Vietnamese government’s decision, all remaining bear bile farms will be forced to close within five years, with all bears relocated to sanctuaries to live out the rest of their days in peace. Sign this petition to thank the Vietnamese officials for this historic agreement.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Phat,

I wish to thank you and your ministry for agreeing to end the cruel practice of bear bile farming in Vietnam and for agreeing that the remaining bears must be relocated to humane sanctuaries. Despite the purported benefits of bear bile claimed by those who practice folk medicine, there is no evidence that this substance is a useful alternative to herbal or synthetic treatments, and the continued exploitation of these animals has been devastating for conservation efforts.

Bears belong in the wild, not confined in miserable conditions and forced to endure painful procedures for the benefit of humans. I thank you for taking a stand for these vulnerable creatures and for reaching this agreement with Animals Asia.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

OH THIS IS SUCH GOOD NEWS, SOME OF THE BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS WILL BE INSANE, AS THEY HAVE BEEN HELD IN THESE CAGES FOR UP TO 20 OR MORE YEARS, I ONLY HOPE THEY ARE INSANE, WHAT A STRANGE THING TO DO TO ANY ANIMAL, AND TO THINK THESE PEOPLE ACTUALLY THINK IT IS RIGHT. SO THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS, BUT PLEASE MAKE SURE IT IS PUT INTO PRACTISE

Why so long? I appreciate the wonderful decision…but 3-5 more years of suffering???

    • Exactly, Liz. This could be implemented almost immediately if the Vietnamese govt was serious about this. Also I hope the govt is funding at least part of the relocation scheme ….. Unlikely though. Animals Asia is to be applauded for its hard work in achieving this positive outcome.

That’s great news that the Vietnamese government is appearing to display its humanity. I hope they stick to their word. But awful that this even goes on and that bears still have 3 years of extreme confinement and torture to endure.
