Target: Heather Cammisa, president and CEO of St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center
Goal: Thank New Jersey animal welfare center for demonstrating the cruelty of gestations crates
People locked themselves in two-by-seven-foot steel cages as part of a demonstration put on by St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in Madison, New Jersey to raise awareness of the cruelty of gestation cages. The cages were only 14 inches deep and no one had enough room to sit, bend, or turn around in them. After four minutes, those who chose to try the demonstration were let out and seemed to have a new outlook on the use of such crates on sows.
The pork industry in the United States locks sows into these cramped crates before they are sent to be slaughtered, which could be up to four years later. The event, called the Great Crate Challenge, was put on by St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center as a way to convince New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to sign a bill to ban these horrible crates. Christie has until December 1,2014 to either veto the bill or do the right thing and sign it.
Many of those who took part in the demonstration described how uncomfortable the crates were and commented that they couldn’t imagine how a sow must feel. If this was done to a cat or a dog, the result would be a charge of animal cruelty. Just because it is a farm animal does not make it acceptable. The pork industry clearly has too many ties to Governor Chris Christie and it is time he listened to those who are now aware of this horrible practice thanks to this demonstration. Please sign the petition below to thank St. Hubert’s CEO Heather Cammisa for putting on this enlightening demonstration and encouraging others to voice their outrage to Governor Chris Christie.
Dear Ms. Cammisa,
Thank you for giving people a chance to experience firsthand the cruelty of a sow’s gestation crate. Your demonstration opened many eyes to the suffering of farm animals at the hands of the pork industry in New Jersey and it is time that more people voiced their opinions on the matter.
By gaining more traction, more pressure will be put on New Jersey Governor Chris Christie so that he will hopefully sign the bill waiting on his desk that would ban the use of gestation crates on sows. No animal, whether domestic or otherwise, should have to suffer such cruelty. Please continue your hard work and put on more demonstrations that will open the eyes of citizens in New Jersey and elsewhere.
