Target: President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil
Goal: Applaud Brazil for banning the use of cramped gestation crates on pig farms
Major changes are happening in Brazil, making animal activists rejoice. Steps are being taken in the country to ban gestation crates, cramped cages that pigs sit in for months or even years until they are finally slaughtered. Sign this petition and applaud the country for taking the necessary steps to remove these inhumane and unethical containers.
BRF, which is the nation’s largest pork producer, promised to remove all gestation crates on company-owned and -contracted farms. In addition, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply signed an agreement with the Brazilian Association of Pig Farmers and the European Union to encourage pig farmers to remove gestation crates from their property. Those that comply will be given training and equipment to house their pigs in a more humane manner. Other nations have followed suit: Canada, the European Union, and New Zealand have all made plans to ban gestation crates.
These containers house pregnant sows and barely give enough room for them to stand or lay down in. Various health problems result from occupying these containers: infections, weak bones, overgrown hooves, and a lack of social interaction. Oftentimes these sows are kept in these crates for their entire lives before they are butchered. It comes as a great relief that Brazil has decided to work towards banning these containers indefinitely. Sign this petition and applaud the nation for curbing this unethical practice.
Dear President Rousseff,
I want to applaud your country for working towards banning controversial and cruel gestational crates. Many countries have come to the realization that these containers are inhumane and should be removed immediately. Pigs are animals that can experience pain and can definitely suffer under these traumatic conditions. I am grateful that the pork industry realizes how abusive this is to their animals. Just because an animal will be killed eventually does not give humans the right to mistreat it until it is butchered.
I hope these crates will be banned in the future, and I hope other nations will follow suit. Pregnancy is an exhausting and painful process, one that shouldn’t be exacerbated by cramped and filthy conditions. I also hope that farmers will take to this change willingly. Please continue to be an example for other countries to follow; no pregnant animal should ever be placed in a cramped cage while delivering babies.
