Strike Down Law that Targets Animal Rights Activists

Target:  Senator Dianne Feinstein

Goal: Repeal legislation used to prosecute animal rights activists as terrorists

The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act is a law that was passed in 2006 that makes it illegal to engage in any type of activism designed to interfere with the operations of an animal enterprise. This law allows for the arrest and prosecution of anyone participating in a peaceful protest against animal testing labs, factory farms, or other types of businesses or institutions that utilize animals as a means for profit. Under the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act, peaceful protesters are prosecuted as terrorists. This law is an infringement upon the constitutional right of freedom of speech and a misuse of the word terrorism. We must implore members of congress to repeal this unjust legislation.

Originally introduced by Senators Dianne Feinstein and James Inhofe, the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act is intended to accommodate the interests of the meat and pharmaceutical industries. Since its inception the law has been used to prosecute a host of peaceful activists engaged in protests against animal abusers. One person was convicted for merely offering technical assistance to a website organized by a group protesting inhumane animal testing being conducted by Huntingdon Life Sciences. Clearly, the law is being used to scare animal activists and prevent them from threatening the interests of enterprises that abuse animals.

The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act was a law designed to protect the meat and pharmaceutical industries from demonstrations undertaken by peaceful animal rights activists. The message is clear- if you stand up for animal rights you can be prosecuted as a terrorist. The law hinders our freedom of speech by preventing us from speaking out against industries that earn money through the exploitation of defenseless animals. We must fight this unjust law. Please sign this petition and urge Senator Feinstein to work to repeal the misguided legislation she helped introduce in 2006.

Dear Senator Feinstein:

In 2006 you helped to introduce and pass the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act. Since then this law has been used to prosecute many peaceful animal rights activists as terrorists. The law sacrifices our right of freedom of speech in order to protect the profits of agribusiness and the pharmaceutical industry. Adherence to this legislation values the profits of those who seek to exploit animals over citizens that merely wish to speak their minds in protest.

The Animal Enterprise Terrorism act is at odds with the values of our free society. I urge you to make amends for passing this misguided and unjust legislation by working within the Senate to have it repealed.
