Praise Police Department for Working to Protect Animals

Target: Captain Donna Greenwell, Kansas City, Missouri Police Department

Goal:  Praise push to ensure justice for victims of animal abuse through harsher punishments for abusers

The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department has been pushing to start its own animal cruelty division in order to file more aggressive charges against animal abusers. The need for such a department stems from the fact that animal control officers can only write city ordinance violations against animal abusers. If an animal cruelty division were created, a police officer could work with animal control officers and push harder for state charges against those that abuse animals.

This division would also hopefully lessen the amount of animal cruelty cases, due to the fear of harsher punishments. The Kansas City animal shelter known as KC Pet Project reported that this year has seen more than 470 cases of animal cruelty and neglect. The creation of this division is desperately needed in order to see justice for these animals and crack down on cases such as dog fighting rings and other crimes associated with them.

The only obstacle in the way of the Kansas City Police Department is funding. A local nonprofit was originally set to fund the division, but the offer fell through. The estimated amount needed to create the division would be $400,000 and an additional $250,000 to maintain it every year, but the many lives that could be saved in the future makes this entirely worthwhile. Please sign the petition below to praise the Kansas City Police Department for pushing harder for the creation of this much needed division.

Dear Captain Donna Greenwell,

I would like to thank you for your efforts to create an animal division in the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. This division is clearly needed since police officers cannot make arrests or file state charges against those who treat animals with cruelty and neglect. With this division, a police officer could work together with animal control officers and give harsher consequences against animal abusers.

Animal abuse is a serious problem, and without the harsher punishments it is more likely to continue. We must stop those who subject animals to neglect and cruelty, and this division would greatly help this cause. I understand that funding is a problem right now and I praise your hard work in searching for the source of this funding. Thank you for recognizing the seriousness of this issue and continue to fight for the well-being of these animals.
