Commend Slaughterhouse Shutdown

Target:  Tom Vilsack, United States Secretary of Agriculture

Goal: Commend Department of Agriculture for shutting down slaughterhouse due to inhumane treatment of animals

The USDA has shut down a slaughterhouse in New Jersey due to egregious animal welfare violations. The inhumane treatment was discovered during an undercover investigation carried out by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). The video showed a calf too sick to walk being dragged across the slaughterhouse floor and a cow still conscious after being improperly shot several times with a stun gun. The USDA should be thanked for taking quick action to shut down the facility.

Unfortunately the animal abuse documented by HSUS at this particular slaughterhouse is not uncommon. Improperly trained staff, poor management, and improperly enforced regulations often lead to slaughterhouses that are unnecessarily cruel to animals. This highlights the importance of work being done by organizations such as HSUS in documenting cases of egregious animal cruelty and of the USDA in enforcing minimal standards of animal welfare.

After receiving the video footage from HSUS, the USDA suspended operations at the Catelli Brothers slaughterhouse in Shrewsbury, New Jersey. The slaughterhouse must submit a formal plan to correct violations and avoid new ones before it can begin slaughtering animals.

It is fortunate that we have laws that hold slaughter facilities accountable for observing even minimal standards for treatment of animals during slaughter. Furthermore, it is important that organizations such as HSUS carry out investigations that expose egregious acts of animal cruelty such as those that occurred at the Catelli Brothers slaughterhouse. We should thank the USDA for acting upon the information provided by the HSUS. By properly enforcing existing laws governing animal cruelty the USDA was able to save other animals from the type of cruel treatment exposed by HSUS’ investigation.

Dear Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack,

I am writing to commend the U.S. Department for its enforcement of animal cruelty laws at the Catelli Brothers slaughterhouse in Shrewsbury New Jersey. This facility was responsible for abhorrent acts of cruelty towards the animals being slaughtered. The video taken by HSUS showed a calf too sick to walk being dragged across the slaughterhouse floor and a cow still conscious after being improperly shot several times with a stun gun.

The timely enforcement action carried out by your department saved countless other animals at the facility from receiving similar cruel treatment. I urge you to continue to vigorously enforce existing laws governing the humane treatment of animals during agricultural use.

  1. Janice Giampaoli says:

Slaughter houses and Factory Farming are beyond horrible to the precious animals who die atrocious deaths. I do not eat any meat of any kind and am trying to buy locally for animal products like milk, butter, eggs to NOT support factory farming. Local, smaller farms are far more likely to practice humane treatment of their animals than huge conglomerates. We need to ban all Factory Farming!!!!!!
