Justice for Puppy Kidnapped, Beaten, and Drowned

Target: Bill Adair, District Attorney, Walker County, Alabama

Goal: Punish juveniles accused of stealing a puppy, beating it, and attempting to drown it in a creek.

Three juveniles are facing charges after allegedly beating and attempting to drown a 3-month-old pit bull puppy. The dog was allegedly stolen from a neighbor’s yard by the three children, aged 12, 13, and 17, who are accused of breaking down a fence to gain access to the yard. The dog was saved, but died of its injuries a couple days afterward.

The children allegedly tried to bring the puppy in to a local swimming pool, but lifeguards told them to take the animal home as it wasn’t allowed in. According to Acting Police Chief Jason Hare, the children then took the dog to a nearby creek, where they beat is severely and attempted to drown it. The dog was saved by lifeguards who responded to its tortured screams, chasing the children away. The dog was found wrapped in a shirt.

The accused children, who have not been named due to their ages, were taken to a juvenile detention facility. One was charged with theft of property and the other two were charged with cruelty to animals.

This act shows shocking cruelty and a blatant disregard for life. Juveniles involved in animal abuse this severe are likely to escalate their violence later on in life. We must therefore ask that they are punished properly as well as subjected to appropriate mental health screenings in order to prevent recidivism in the future.

Dear Mr. Adair,

Three juveniles are facing charges after allegedly breaking down a neighbor’s fence to steal a puppy, then brutalizing the puppy and trying to drown it. According to witnesses, the children tried to bring the puppy into a local pool but were turned away. Reports say that the children then took the puppy to a nearby creek where they beat it and tried to drown it. While the dog was rescued, it died of its injuries only a couple days later.

Children capable of this sort of violence are at a high risk of escalating their violence to larger animals or even humans. For this reason, we ask that you seek to punish them properly as well as subject them to appropriate mental health screenings in order to prevent recidivism in the future.
