Applaud Efforts to Protect Endangered Species

Target: Member of the Liberian House of Representatives Josephine M. George-Francis

Goal: Applaud attempts to protect endangered species and their habitat in Liberia

The Liberian government has introduced important legislation that will protect both endangered and stable species of the area. The “National Wildlife Conservation and Protection Area Management Act” will protect many species of animals and plants from hunting or harvesting. Liberia is home to numerous unique species, some of which are threatened or endangered. The government has introduced this bill in hopes of helping those species labeled as ‘endangered,’ and to ensure that the species that are stable stay that way.

This bill has passed Liberia’s House of Representatives (House) and is now on its way to the Senate. In explaining its decision to pass this bill, the House noted that two-thirds of the world’s plants and animals reside in forests. Protecting the plants and animals within forests is vitally important to the forests’ ecosystems and therefore the health of the earth. This law will also facilitate the creation of larger habitats for Liberia’s flora and fauna. Animals protected under this act will be free from many different methods of hunting, including capturing, poisoning, snaring and taking of their body parts. Birds’ nests and eggs will be protected if the species is listed in the bill, as well as lizard eggs.

Collaboration with neighboring countries will also be strengthened through this act. Much is riding on the Senate’s approval of this bill; with it, countless species of plants and animals will be rehabilitated and protected. Commend the House for understanding the importance of this bill and, with your signature, convince the Senate to pass this important bill so it may be one step closer to becoming law.

Dear Representative George-Francis,

I am writing to commend the Liberian House of Representatives for passing the “National Wildlife Conservation and Protection Area Management Act.” This piece of legislation is extremely important for the well-being of countless species of flora and fauna within the country. It is my understanding that this bill is yet to be passed by the Senate; please share this petition and its signatures with that body of government to encourage approval of the bill.

It is my hope that this important legislation will rehabilitate those animals in need of help within Liberia. I also want to note my approval of a separate piece of legislation: the ban on the sale of bush meat within the country. This is an intelligent decision in the nation’s fight against Ebola.

Thank you for providing a voice to the needy flora and fauna of Liberia. Your efforts are highly commended.
